changing from w98 to 2000

I know, I know, it's still Microsoft. My husband works for the college and we were able to buy 2000 for a song. I want to change from 98 to 2000 on my computer, but it's not an upgrade, it's the full program. I know how to format, I can do most anything if I have the steps. Help:( and also...
I have the full 98 loaded onto my hd, and don't want to lose it in case I don't like 2000. Should i just move it to my D drive?
