New picture of violets

South, TX

I am a vacuum freak with my shelves and I was doing that, watering and wiping them down today. Just took a quick photo. I need to get a better one. My epecia's are now in the sunroom and more violets are there also.

Sally,
Everything looks great! My shelves will never be that neat and tidy...LOL.

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

Sally, I like clean shelves too. Here is my episcia 'silver skies' [again] which is really doing well. I will have to put it in the jar like yours in a short while. It is my first try at episcias and I am so proud of myself!!

Mortswife, it looks great! I have quite a few in glass. They love it. I don't put tops on any except my two large Cleopatra's.

My epecia's are all in the sunroom now. They didn't like the shelves inside. Well, the Cleopatra's sure do, but the rest didn't.

Sally,
Do you find that any Episcias except the light pink or light pink variegated need a covered environment? Also,do you think there is a major difference in light requirements? From experience...way back...it seemed to me that most of them with darker or more silvery foliage could withstand lower temps. and humidity.
I would appreciate your opinion.

Well, I just know for me that the Cleopatra's like more light and LOTS of humitidy. They all like humidity and look dry and sad if they don't get it.

I have found that all colors like to be in glass but don't have to be covered. The only ones covered are my Cleopatra's. They are growing only in peat also. They LOVE it.

That kind of confirms my thinking. The light pinks need more humidity.I didn't know they liked more light.Thank you.

Well, that is how they are here, you never know. Each home is different, as well as the lights.

Sally,
Do you hand water everything? I didn't see any wicking containers.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I see she has a few of those oyama pots, and there are a few pots on top of containers . . . so, at least, not all hand watering . . . ^_^

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

I hand water everything. I have a baby medicine dropper I use a lot or my turkey baster. I have to be in control or I'll lose them. Cheryl

Sally, your epicia that is in peat, is it the long spagham peat? My two epicia are not doing well at all. I just bought a glass bowl and I'm going to plant one of them it it. I'm not sure what kind of soil to put it in.

South, TX

WELL... I AM hand watering! Even the Oyama's. Some are still up on reservoirs just because they like it or the leaves are long. I was 100% wick watering for a year, then BOOM! They were all of the sudden too wet. Lost some. Some are now small that were large. :(

I had repotted as usual, all was the same SO ODD. All was perfect and it just didn't work any longer.

So, I use a turkey baster now. Everyone is very happy again.

It is fine unless I go out of TOWN. OK for three days, but I have not left for longer than that yet. If I do, I will need someone to come on the third day.

I like not having the reserviors to mess with really, but it worked for a long time.

Ima digger, yes the peat is the fluffy kind, long. NOT the stuff for violets that is sort of powdery and light. It is worth a try if there is a problem with one of your epecia's. Just watch it, not to dry or wet. It may need more or less light too. I have had to really watch and figure out what they like. They like my sunroom best.

Sally,
I have just started wicking for the first time and I am still very nervous about losing plants to too much water! I have always let plants dry out to a certain degree, depending on what they are. Most plants will recover from a wilt, but not a severe root or crown rot.Everybody hope for me please ^_^. LOL I don't want to lose my babies!!

Make sure the soil is really light. I did, but still had problems after so long. I still can't get over it! Lots of people wick fine. Just keep an eye out. Good luck.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks,I may need it. ^_^

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I am going to put some of my streps on matting I hope this weekend as they don't wick well and I have done them more then once and still they don't so will try the matting now....
Hugs,
Susan
