Will my horse eat my asparagus?

Waynesville, MO

I am trying to decide where to plant my asparagus that is out of the way. I want to plant it along my fence but I am not sure if my horses will lean over the fence to eat it. Anyone out there a horse owner and asparagus grower? Any thoughts? I'll be posting this under livestock as well.

You might try posting it on the Equine Forum too....

I have a horse and strongly suspect he would eat asparagus, but I've never actually offered him any.

I don't have a horse but I have known a few over the years and, yes, they would eat asparagus -- those fresh juicey young buds. Right up there with carrots and apples, but harder to get. That's my guess, anyhow. Maybe someone will have actual knowledge of the subject.
I can't think of a whole lot horses won't eat, now that I think of it.

OK, This is something I do know about (I'm a newbie on this forum and usually lurk as I'm trying to learn everything and only know just a bit about veg gardening!).

Yes, your horse will eat your asparagus if he decides he likes asparagus. This of your horse's eating tastes sort of like your three or four year old child's tastes. He'll eat it if he thinks he might like it..or not. You can bet that if you do not want him to eat it or mess with it, then he will as soon as you turn your back. I once knew a horse named Peanuts who used to like to eat cigarettes (no filters). One of my horses did not like carrots but loved green beans out of the can.

That's funni, terry, rather like my dog with some vegetables. Only horses are vegetarians so they are a lot more likely to go for vegetables than a dog. But they have their tastes, too, just as people and dogs do.
