OK, so this is my first year planting herbs. I have Sweet Basil, Rosemary, Dill and Oregano. I plan to plant them in pots and not in my garden. I was wondering if it would be OK to mix the Herbs in one pot? Any advice?
Can multiple Herbs be planted in one pot?
Yes it's fine and fairly common. There might be a few that don't do as well together due to sizes or nutrient demands, but most will do fine. I've had Sage, Chives, Thyme and Catnip. I have a kit for a window planter with Thyme, Oregano and Lavender.
Only that oregano is a perennial and basil and dill are annuals, rosemary is a tender perennial. It will be fine this summer (read the articles about basil; go to guides and information then articles then search basil, or go to critterologist's member page and scroll waaaaaay down - she's written some great ones about basil). In our zone, the rosemary won't make unless you bring it inside. The oregano can stay in the pot over the winter and by next year it might want the whole pot to itself! ^_^
If you're doing mixed pots, I'd suggest using large containers -- 12" or 14" diameter (10" for sure, and don't try it in a 6 inch pot -- those baby plants will grow, and you'll be watering 3 times a day). Even then, you may need to split them after a couple of years. I like to use a more upright one like sage or french thyme (or basil if an annual works for you), then surround it with creeping/sprawling/trailing thymes, oreganos, etc. Chives would make a nice contrast in texture for a mixed pot, also.
