Celebrate the sweet potato today! It is the official sign of Spring here in Benton.
Our celebration was complicated because of the snow flurries, and the grand parade was shortened considerably, but once more, we have held up our tradition that now spans parts of 3 centuries.

Celebrate! Hug a Tater today!
Today is Tater Day!
I loved your article. Every region needs a Tater Day or Watermelon Festival or Pecan Festival or Tomatofest or...........something to foster regional pride and sense of community.
Yeah, I just had to dredge it out of the archives today. The weather was miserable, and I only attended the Saturday flea market when it was sunny and 75. It has alternately rained, sleeted and snowed today, so I worked here at DG.
And you forgot to tell everybody you stopped by my first year Heirloom Tomato booth and even shared some of your rare tomatoseeds with me at tater day. I started a few of them today. thanks!! John
Hi John, glad to see you here!
Thanks Melody, i thought i'd join up and visit with you all for a while.. And thanks again for the seeds! I'll let you know how i like them. And yes Tater Day was pretty bad weather wise this year, i am going to take the rest of my plants down to traders mall this weekend . John
Well, I missed the fun, but next year on April 3, "tater day" will appear on the Gardening History lineup (According to some calendars I found, the first Monday in April 1843 would have been 4/3/1843. ;o)
That will probably be a great place to sell some. I'm starting some more this week too...a hedge against a garden disaster...or two months of monsoons (which as we well know is a possibility)
Let me know if you need anything...and ya'll welcome John to DG!
Great idea...Terry! Why didn't I think of that?
Chuckle...I dunno, but I was happy to add it ;o)
If anyone else knows of historical, noteworthy celebrations or gardening-related events that should be included in Garden History, please do let us know!
