I just cleaned out the cabinet where i had stored my winter squashes. I found two that had been hidden. One in pretty rotten, but fairly intact. Can I demolish it and save the seeds? It's a variety I really want again this year, but neglected to save, and couldn't afford to buy, Trombocino. Could I use them this year?
The other is a spaghetti squash from 2007. It's in great shape, feels as if i could cut it up and eat it. Is that safe?? I'd like to use seeds from that, as well, as it surely proved to be a Long Keeper!!
Thanks!
Margo
I'll post this on Seed Saving, as well
Saving seeds from squash
Wow on the spaghetti squash. This is my first year growing them and they are already in bloom. Can you tell me how you stored them that they last that well?
Podster, they didn't all last that long, although the spaghettis were the longest lasting of my winter varieties. I found them in the back of the bottom of an old Hoosier cabinet. I seldom open the bottom doors, so it's pretty consistently dark. It's in the front hall of the "in-law" apartment, and the temp stays a pretty steady 58-64 in winter, and doesn't get really hot in the summer, even if the air isn't on, and it usually isn't. I have no idea why it kept, but that's one reason I'd like to keep the seeds. May not be useful, they could easily be cross-pollinated, but, it will be an adventure.
