Why is it that when I cut lilacs they wilt even when I put in them water right away and smash the the ends like I've read. I just got back from Madrid where they are blooming and I've got Lilac Fever. What's the secret. I've got 6 diferent types and some are ok but my favorites wilt on me.

You can try putting sugar in the warm water - some people swear by 7up, but I just use sugar in cut flowers - doesn't take much - maybe half a tsp. in a quart of warm water - needs to be changed daily.
i am wondering if it's the warm water as these bloom during a coolish time of the year (so they may prefer cool?)...just a thought.

Hmmm...I don't remember there being an issue with that...I cut them and bring them to my office...now I'll have to pay attention when I do that this year. Drop of Superthrive probably wouldn't hurt either...
