After several hurricanes the porch had given up the ghost and one thing or another delayed us getting it replaced. I finally had a "enough is enough" moment and "talked" the DH into having it replaced. Love the porch but HATE the shade, we've had to rearrange as might have to do more but here is the current set up. I'm having to ring the edge of the slab with my herbs and hope to replace those pots with one stacker for herbs only and we have two hunter fans with light kits yet to be installed.
EB's & the new porch
Of course in all good days a bit of rain must fall...Monday night temps are to fall to 33. DH is in town now scurrying around trying to find more frost cloth.
Beautiful new porch! You might consider placing square stepping stones at intervals around the perimeter, giving you sunnier spots to set your containers. (I'm thinking you could set them down flush so you could mow right over them... yes, I know your DH likes his grass, but this wouldn't take much lawn space away.)
LOL right now he's told me not to even ask for anything else..between the porch, fans, light kits, sod etc he says the First National Bank of Sepulveda is closed...*G*
That is beautiful as well as functional. I lived right across the river from you at DeQuincy, La from 1970 untill 1993 so I can certainly understand your weather problems. You have had some bad times in recent years.
They hadn't had a major hurricane here in 50 years until we moved here right before Rita...we've now had Katrina, Rita, Humberto, Ike, Gustav and humm...I'm forgetting one I think...
Well, for the moment, all you'd have to do is figure out what size stepping stones at what intervals, and you could just cut away some sections of sod to give you places to set containers (setting right onto the lawn would work, if you didn't care if the grass died under them, which wouldn't matter if stepping stones were an eventual part of the plan). Just one possible solution to wanting more containers where the sun can reach them!
You're going to love your cool, shady porch this summer --especially with the fans! :-)
Beautiful new porch Araness! I am envious!
Beautiful setup !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Araness: Beautiful deck/ porch and gorgeous looking plants. You have a wonderful set up and it looks great, I have to ask you this though, how did you get your corn planted, I noticed you have a mulch cover on the EB you have your corn in, so did you direct seed plant your corn and then cut holes in the mulch cover or put the mulch cover and then plant your corn seedlings through the cover?
Those peppers and the tomato look spectacular. We got hit with a cold spell tonight that will last a few days, in the 28's and 29's, unbelievable. Groan.

Joy I didn't use much forethought and next time I'll do it differently. I just planted then we cut holes and put the cover on. It wasn't a bother except for the fact I can't plant in a straight line with a ruler and a string. Next time I'll either pre-cut the holes or I'll plant using a strip to at least insure that it's straight. We took the chance and planted early and in some cases it will pay off others, not. We've lost a few beans and peppers to the cold that we had in the past but those were/are easily replanted or resowed so not concerned in the least. We lost one (maybe two) tomato plants again, not a huge loss since I had extra. Corn well that's a wait and see how it does...again this was a year to give new things a try and learn so if we make mistakes or lose a few plants it's all in the name of progress. If my thermometer is correct it only got down to 41 inside the tomato cover last night, if so I'm thrilled as they might not like it that low it does very little damage, I'll leave the cover on for the day since tonight will be colder also then it's smooth sailing for the rest of the week.
Araness: Yep, I'm leaving the greenhouse zipped at night except for 4 bottom windows just in case it dips down again, it was beautiful out today though and had to open it up and let them get some sunshine and air. LOL
