anyone into heirloom tomatoes, old german, brandywine, mortgage lifter
heirloom tomatoes
I have seeds started [March 29th] of some heirlooms ........and hybrids too.
I have German Strawberry Red, Anna Russisan, Rose de Berne, Cherokee Purple, Mortgage Lifter, and Dr. Wyche yellow.
hugger,
There are dozens of great topics about heirloom tomatoes in the Tomatoes forum:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/tomatoes/all/
Plus there is a topic with over 230 responses about "What is your favorite heirloom tomato?":

I would say Old German can be stingy. I love Brandywine but have to plant it very early. Have not grown Mortgage Lifter believe it or not.
Cherokee Purple is my favorite.

Welcome huggergirl.
Yes, there are more tomatoes over in the tomato forum, but who wants to be out-muscled?? LOL
I have relatives up there in Whitley and Noble Counties.
Indy,Iam really green at this web site, just stumbling around a bit .we live just south of the noble line
huggergirl,
My brother used to live just across the county line from Noble County on 109 I think, and my nephew north of Columbia City and.............and.....
Not criticizing anyone. Dave's Garden is a close-knit family and folks should feel comfortable here.
Indy,cherokee purple,what are they like??and try mortgage lifter,yummie
Cherokee Purple is an heirloom favorite for many. How good? I can't really say. Mortgage Lifter is good. Anna Russian is one of my favorites.......rosy colored and heart shape....what more could you ask.
Here is the Cherokee Purple entry in Plantfiles: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/552/
To search for information on a plant, just type the cultivar name in the area labeled 'cultivar' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?Search=Click+here+to+search+for+plants
You do not need to fill our the rest of the information... which is a popular misconception. Now, if another variety of plant has the same name, then both will pop up, but you can easily select the one that you wish to study.
Enjoy!
(this works for everything...not just tomatoes)
I'm growing Cherokee Purple for the first time this year and so far I can say it is a strong healthy looking plant with lots of blooms.
Royal Hillbilly is the one impressing me the most so far. I read on the tomato forum that it gets large pink fruits with "exquisite" taste and somebody got 44lbs off one plant. So far it is the earliest of the large main season plants to set fruit and has so many blooms that I can believe it will have an enormous yield. If it tastes as good as advertised, it will have to go on my forever list.
