Hello Iris
Depends on what kind of "dirt" you have. It will root in a warm well draining media, placed in a sunny location (this time of year only, as it gets hotter you would need partial shade). For rooting I use 30-40% perlite(or other media which helps with drainage) mixed with 60-70% potting soil. If the potting soil has a lot of fine material in it use more perlite. Water it until water drains out the bottom, I only water again if the media gets on the verge of completely dry. There are other methods...I have just been the most successful with this one.

ok thats what im doing then , i just puled the stem out and stuck the top immediately back in , its still green after a few days.

What do you mean " I pulled the stem out"? could you please elaborate? I hope you didn't trash the bottom as it will regrow also. One thing I forgo0t to mention is that you should cut the bottom of the broken top flush and let it callous for about a week before trying to root it.

oh man! i pulled the stem and roots out of the cup and plunked the top in ! ill try to callus it . it survived below freezing temps for a week during the ice storm i really want it to live , lol

iris - what is the age of your seedling? what did you do with the stem that had roots?

they are maybe 6 inches tall . i started them in aug or sept. and i think i threw out the stem with the roots .

ummm...you got rid of the good part. never throw away the mother plant when you make a cutting, whether on purpose or by accident. :)

lol i was in a panic i feel so guily . so how do i get it to callous . windowsill ..heat pad and grow lights ...?

just let it sit somewhere in the house. you're just trying to get the cut end to heal/seal.
