I had my 4"h cucumbers out all day in the sun. The cukes and some of the squash and cantaloupe are shriveled directly below the leaves but the rest of the stem is fat and firm. Also, the leaves are bleaching out. I searched to no avail. Any thoughts? Is it too late to add peat to support the stems or are they toast? I thought it was too soon for plant food but maybe not? Did I expose them to too much direct sunlight too soon? They have been outside on patio for about 1 week. Here is a pic of a cuke.
Cucumbers flopped over and leaves bleaching
It looks like they have been needing more light...and got too much sudden sun. They can recover from that, but that spindly stem could use some peat support but not soppy wet though. Also a bit of food can't hurt either.
The plant shown needs help fast.
If that were my plant I would for sure add peat or coir to support that stem.
I would toss that seedling in the trash and start over. I would ensure the next seedling got enough light starting immediately after germination.
You have a very weak seedling that was light starved and then got scorched in the sun. Trash it and start over. No sense trying to nurture it back to health when they take so little time to get to the stage yours is at with decent light.
I agree with justaguy2. Your cukes, squash and cantaloupe are all very fast to sprout and grow, they will be back up there before you know it and healthier by starting over. If it were peppers or a tomatoes, I might put a little more effort into it, but not for fast growers like those.
I say put them out of their misery.
In Smyrna, GA I'd soak cuke/squash seeds for a few minutes and then sow directly in the ground.
Thanks for all the feedback. When the plant ambulance arrived last night I discovered it was just the lemon cukes. I wanted to try early indoor sowing, despite the directions not to. After the freeze on Tuesday, I plan to directly sow them into the ground. I am definitely investing in a grow light before my next batch of seed starts. Good call on the pre-soaking.
Sujo16,dont waste your money on grow lights, just buy 4ft flouresent shop lights, iam using cool white bulbs, you can use 1 warm 1cool or just cool, 10 -15 bucks with bulbs,oh,40 watt,no less, also i use 2 fixtures per shelf-2 flats.iam using an old rubbermaid shelf ,i will have to post a few pictures of it.
