Growing Tobacco?

Waynesville, MO

Have any of you ever tried growing your own tobacco? Has it turned out well for you? I am mulling it over. My husband chews tobacco and the prices just keep going up. I have tried everything besides divorce to get him to quit and none have worked. I hate paying so much money for an addiction. I would like to try to grow our own and try to make plug tobacco. Maybe the stuff I make will be yuckie enough to drive him to quit!! LOL!!

Been awhile. Problem is getting seeds of appropriate cultivars. Chewing tobacco is easiest for small growers, because it is sun cured. Brights need to be flue cured.

I'd suggest posting on whatever regiional gardening forum that the Kentucky subscribers hang out on. Surely some of them know of somebody that grows their own chew.

If that doesn't work, most states have their farmer's bulletin online now and you could look to see what's listed for sale.

It's really easy to grow. Bugs seem to like it pretty well though, especially aphids and tomato hornworms, but a simple soap spray took care of the aphids and picking them off got rid of the hornworms.
