PLANTING TUBORS

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

OK, Duh! I'm trying to plant peonies. Do they go in horizontally or vertically? I get the part about having the eyes one to two inches underground, but the things are 6 - 8 inches long. Help! Do I put them in up and down or sideways? I've only planted established bedding plants and bulbs. Anxiously awaiting your advice.............

If you plant them sideways, they'll figure themselves out.

Thank you Stephanietx. You're a jewel. I just knew everyone would be too busy cooking supper to notice my plea. Thanks tons. Syb

My DH is cooking us dinner tonight. :)

Stephanietx, are you one of the ones going to a plant trade fair (my term) in our area soon? I get so mad at myself, because I still can't navigate around on DG for squat. I should take time to hit all the links, yadda, yadda, but, instead, I only get on when I need something (ya know--crisis time). Anyway, today when I logged on, I happened onto a conversation between a lot of the DGers around here, talking about trading plants and such. That sounds so cool, and I would love to participate in something like that. I remember now where I saw it. I had posted a while back about my elephant ears, and when I got on this time there had been more responses to my question. Well, some responded to my question, and then, on the same thread, they all started talking about this "event." Again, I asssume it's done and gone by now, but I'd sure like to be in on the next one. Actually, I was notified one time about something like that, but it was at a bad time for me, and I couldn't go. Do you think I'll get further notifications since I didn't attend before?

I'm sure you enjoyed your DH's wonderful dinner. Mine can't boil water, but he's my "pooter" guru. Just as well, since cooking is another of my passions. We don't need two cooks in the kitchen. Or maybe it's just that I don't know what I'm missing, since I've never had it. :)

Hey Sheila, thanks for responding. I'll post tomorrow if I can come. It's sort of doubtful, but I'll check with DH. If I can come, I'll bring three Weight Watcher (sugar free) pies.

At this point, I really don't have any plants to bring. Is it OK to just come and look or buy? I live in the country, and it takes a while to find plants that can make it out here, plus ones the rabbits don't like. I start over quite often. Syb

I hear you on the country with rabbits and deer! I am having a hard time putting in a garden for my Great Nephew. So far they have left the oregano, milkweed, and daylilies alone.

No buying...we only trade or give away plants. Some people bring garden crafts to trade, others starbucks coffee grounds, or potting soil. If you don't have anything, it's ok. After we eat and all the trades and door prizes are gone it is a leftover give-a-way!! No one wants to take their extras back home. LOL!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We'd love for you to come! And really, you won't leave empty handed even if you have nothing to trade!!

Well, as I feared, it's not gonna happen for me this time. I was being all excited while telling my DH about the swap--"Isn't that the neatest thing....It's going to be so much fun...I wonder if Kathleen and Kathy (the DILs) would meet me over there?" Then I went to bed, and KA-CHING, I remembered that I have a committee meeting directly after church tomorrow. We're looking for a worship leader, and a young man is coming to lead worship tomorrow. He's not exactly "in view of a call," but we're pretty sold on him so far, and I think we'll decide tomorrow if we want to extend an offer or not. My committee (Worship) and the Personnel committee will meet together to decide, so no telling how long it will take.

All that said, I'm really going to miss meeting all you guys, and for sure, I want to go the next time. Do you have them once per year, or what? Also, I did think of something to bring. I don't know the name of these things, but it starts with brug...., I think. I get plants from a mom and pop nurseryman (Mexican) out in the country in Mansfield. He speaks pretty good English, but he doesn't know all the English plant names. Nothing is labeled. We just call this thing "that trumpet flower." It's double with white and purple. Really beautiful. The first couple of years I could hardly get it started in the spring. Now, the little buggers are coming up everywhere, so I could bring some of those things. I also have the seeds from last year. Oh well, no use thinking about it now. I hope you all have a wonderful time, and don't get blown away. My cousin and I were going to take the horses to Lake Benbrook today, but the wind was so wild earlier, and then by the time it had died down some, we were out of the mood--too lazy.
Blessings,
Syb

Thanks so much, girls, and the same back to you. I had a very good time, and can't wait to start potting stuff to be ready for the next swap. Everyone was very kind to me. It's suppose to be non-windy tomorrow, so I just got home with two more yards of mulch to spread. I'm about to go out to cover the tender things that have already come up. I was checking the tropicannas, to see if they can handle a freeze. Also Mexican Heather. Do you know?
