Has anyone grown candytuft in the Houston area? I saw some at the nursery and it said it blooms spring to fall, however the plant files says it only blooms in early spring. The two comments in plant files were from the northern U.S., so I don't know if it tolerate our high heat.
Any input appreciated.

That's one of those things that I tried in my younger days when I didn't know diddley about gardening (not that I know diddley now). Anyhow, it doesn't thrive under our heat. It's one of those things like alysum (sp), lobelia, annual dianthus, petunias that need to be planted in the fall and which w/luck will go thru the winter for us and on into the spring until hot weather fries it. Sorry, Crow, but that's my input, bad as it is.
Ann
I would concur but like Ann, I'm not sure I knew diddley or do even yet! LOL
I've tried them enough to be discouraged from trying again. On the other hand, you are able to extract unusual successes from your plants... might be worth a try.
Gee, I wish I'd remember to ask these questions BEFORE buying the this stuff ! I am the proud owner of 3 of them, so I'll plop them in a semi shaded location and see what happens. I'd been trying to find white Angelonia, but nobody has them in stock yet. It seems all I can find are impatiens and begoinias and if you don't want those, you're outta' luck right now.
Thanks for the input. I won't expect much from them, so anything good will be a surprise.
Crow, HGC has had some beautiful bedding plants - seas of them - and so does Lowe's. There is lots out there that isn't the same ol' but for the life of me I can't remember what except zinnias but really a bunch of them.
Ann
I have managed to overwinter Angelonia for two years now. The white is just beginning to bloom. The purple and mauve start blooming earlier. Like that plant!
Ann, I went to both Lowe's and HGC. A lot of the bedding stuff is cool weather, like petunias, snapdragons, etc. I don't usually put any of those in this late because they fry shortly. I guess I'm just trying to jump the gun on summer plants. Our subdivision is having a garden tour at the end of the month and my house is on the tour. I'm trying to fill in some spots where the dormant stuff hasn't taken off yet.
Who's Diddley?????????????
Crow, have you tried soapwort????????? Mine blooms throughout the summer, and smells great.
Annette, you don't know Diddley Poo or his cousin, Diddley Squat?
Ann
Nope, and I'm not sure I want to!!!! Sometimes it's better that way............
Annette ~ I have a nice soapwort plant that smells wonderful but mine has never bloomed all summer. What is your secret. I would love that!
Since it blooms off and on, I really don't really know, other than I neglect it. It grows like crazy for me. I'll try to take a picture tomorrow. Most of it is going to be torn out, and the soil improved. It may be the nasty clay soil its in. I think I saw some buds on it. I have some in a pot, that I never feed, and it blooms, too! When I brought the one in the pot home, I got mad at DH, because I already had a section of my "hill" taken over, but I didn't know the name...........Now I will never forget!!!!!! I consider it one of my mistakes, sort of like wisteria, skyflower, cashmere bouquet. Thank goodness I have learned from my mistakes (not to mention paying for them in hard labor).
Forgot to mention it's in full sun. One of the few plants that doesn't need afternoon shade!!
Sounds like a similar spot here. I kept in potted till last year. Maybe it will take off for me this year.
I think I looked into some of this once before. Is there is a double variety in a pale pink/white? I can't remember the cultivar name, but everything I read said it wouldn't survive in our high heat/humidity climate. Guess they were wrong? Is this the same plant that goes by the common name "Bouncing Bet"?
Annette, is the soapwort what you're tearing out because it's invasive, but bought another pot of it? That sounds like something I'd do. A friend and I shopped for plants yesterday. We got what I just knew was a flame acanthus, only to find out it's coral honeysuckle, an invasive. Once we were home with it, she decided she might even have some growing wild behind her house. As you said, we live and learn!
Yes, it's Bouncing bet. If I'd kept on my toes it would have been controlled. Not really invasive, but slightly aggressive, if that makes sense. I think it would be fine, and I do love the flowers, but I have been lazy of late. It's not being torn out due to invasiveness, but because I am having to re-do that particular garden, thanks to Ike. I'll post some pictures later. It's been in the ground for about 10 years,or more.
Annette, I'm really happy to hear about the soapwort. I'm definitely going to try to locate some and find a spot for it. Now, if I can only find the name of that cultivar that I thought was so pretty. I'm sure it's in one of my garden books, but which one??? This could take a while :)

Check with Arbor Gate. They should have some, that's where bought the extra, after a program by Dr. Welch. It may be in an Herb book.
Thanks for the info. I'll try Arbor Gate.
I like your walkway with the island in the middle. I'm sorry to hear about your damage from Ike. We were really lucky and didn't get much damage. I'm having to adjust my gardening to the loss of 7 large pines that had to be removed due to bettle infestation. Things are getting a lot more sun than before, so not sure what will survive and what will burn up.
Crow
We were blessed during Ike. Our damage could have been much worse. The tree totally missed our house. We just got rid of it about a month ago, and I'm onlly able to work outside for a few hours at a time, but it will shape up! We had some trees removed a few years ago because we weren't getting enough sun on our vegetable garden, but in the process it eliminated most of the shade in my shade garden.......I was scrambling to move plants. Some of them were unmovable, and therefore, lost. The rest have "adapted" to less shade. Funny how sun will make you change the shape of things! Some beds shrink, and others get expanded!
