My First Hummer! My First Hummer!

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Today I say my very first hummer ever!!!! I was so excited because we planted the hummer / BF garden back in February and I was starting to think they wouldnt come (the hummers.. BF's have been here many times) but today I saw a little movement in the round flower bed and low and behold.. a tiny hummer was feeding from the Black and Blue Salvia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *happy dance ensues*... Im sooo happy.. so, so happy.. its kinda like verification that my garden is accepted!

Yea Cue!!! Isn't it so rewarding to get a response. I get that way with my butterflies! I have the B&B salvia and it does seem to be a favorite. But the plant I found out can be invasive, so I need to keep it in check.

I dont mind if the B&B Salvia invade its own bed.. I kinda fond of that overgrown cottage look, but Ill make sure it doesnt pop up in other parts its not meant to be in!

BTW, this was ou first attemopt at a garen ever. we have always lived in an apt and never had space for much gardening.. not even containers, so when we moved into this rented house, we went all out in the teeny back yard.. there are flowering plants and bushes everywhere now.. when we moved here, there wqs nothing.. I mean nothing. Im so happy. That just made my entire day!

I love people who get excited over these things. I think that's why I like DG so much. Cue_chik, I'm very happy for you. You will have to practice restraint now, because you will want to sit in front of that plant waiting to see them. If you hang a feeder where you can see it, it will draw them in closer and offer them a little extra food to fuel their activity. Not necessary, of course, but adds a little extra fun.

Congratulations on joining the hummer lover club!

Congatluations! That is so awesome - I am so happy for you! That is so great that you put a hummer & butterfly garden in as your first. I think these type are more enjoyable than any. I have about a month before the hummers are in my area. Can't wait!! :)

actually, the beds sit right outside y bedroom window, the round one is right smack in the middle of the yard and viewable from all rear windows! and guess what else???

There are two.. and they just collected some 'fluff' off of a 'weed' growing in the back yard! so they must be building a nest close by!!!!!!!!! WOOOO HOOOOO!

*does more happy dancing* I promise you.. that just made all that hard work and money I really couldnt afford to spend on this garden ALL worth it!

Great planning! Yep, if they're collecting fluff, you know what comes next. It's amazing how much they can carry on their little noses, too!

whats funny is, this weed sprouted up about 2 weeks ago. I have no idea what it is, but its growing about 3 ft away from my Milkweed. it had buds on it so I decided to let it bloom and see what it looked like. well, it blooms this fluffy cotton looking stuff. now Im glad I didnt pul it up!

Butterfly and Hummingbird Flowers from Lowe's : $750, Feeders and Birdbaths: $150, waking up one morning to find it all paid off with caterpillars and hummers in your garden... Priceless!

Congrats!!! They are such fun to have around. I hope you get to see the nest as well :-)

Thank you! I was excited to see her back this morning, gathering more fluff for her nest. She came back a little later and made the rounds thru the garden, so I am hoping she's a new temporary resident! and also hoping she decides to bring some friends, but if anything, I'll have her young to look forward to seeing in the garden soon enough :)
