Okay, my dad brought over some eggs on Friday the 13 in March. This morning I went out and there are two babies under my broody! I called him right away. He is excited. He put 10 eggs in there so I hope there are more. I will check throughout the day. They are red. Just beautiful. I need to find batteries for my camera then I can post pics of the little cutie. My broodies have now come in handy.
A peek under my broody
can't wait to see them. my broody hatched out 2 ,4 weeks ago
Yeah for broody girls!! hip hip horray!! Congrats! I will get batteries when I go out to get my hairs cut. :D
Wonderful! Are the eggs all from different hens? I think that sounds wonderful! I have a broody but no hatch yet. I had one broody who began eating her eggs yesterday. I was very shocked. I grabbed the rest and brought them in. They were completely covered in egg goo so I did rinse them. I am not sure how long she was on them - maybe 10 days. Anyway, I put them in the 'bator and we'll see.
Hey Jordankittyjo! Great to see you posting! How have you been?! What color were your little chickums?
How exciting! That has to be the cutest thing ever... Can't wait to see pics...
I want a broody!!!
I have a new Nankin broody--they are the broodiest little creatures. Out of five, two have hatched chicks and two are now broody. I am putting some Frizzled Japanese Bantam eggs under the newest one today.
Isn't it fun, sewincircle, to lift the broody up and watch the chicks tumble out! I hope you find more today.
Oh Oh Oh.. I'm so excited Catscan!!!!!
Sewin.. I can't wait for pics! Mom & baby pics are the bestest..
You ROCK Sew!! Tell Papa congrats. Haystack
I am sorry!! I have been gone getting haircut and at the stupid mall. Okay, the mall isnt really stupid. I just dont like going. Well. Dad has three new babies now and at least one more pip! woohoo! Go daddy eggs!! I have a rehersal dinner so I gotta fly. Thanks all. I forgot batteries too!!! UGH!!!
Awww! Red heads!
Yes, new hampshires I think. Not 100% sure though. He put in a few different breeds. So far no australorps or barred rocks or buff orps. These are all clean legs. They are very good on their little feet also.
awww wittle cutie pies!!
lil wut wut babiez.. boo boo babiez! so fuzzy and perfect..
Adorable! I can just hear them peeping!!
My poor dad came over to peek at them while I collect them. (he just couldnt stay away) hehehe I felt awful. I said look at their color dad! He kept looking, then said, what color are they? :( Dad is color blind (red/green). Still only three babies. I checked last night and could not find the pip egg. It was dark, cold, rainy, and windy though so I couldnt see much of anything. I will check again before I leave for the wedding. :D
claire, they were 1 new hampshire red, and 1 cochin banty. the rest of the eggs froze
Oh dear JKJ, poor little eggies. I had the same problem earlier even with the ones I was collecting for our eating eggs. Now I have 2 thai hens that are broody and one red hen, probably a red star or something like that. I hope some of those will work out and we'll see some little fluffballs incubated by their mothers instead of the machine in the basement!
Broodies are the best! I can't believe how well my Nankins are doing with these ittty bitty Serama chicks is a yard full of chickens. No one messes with them and they are so healthy. I now feel kinda guilty about the chicks I am hatching in the incubator--no Mamma to cuddle them and show them what to do.
Fortunately chicks are pretty hard wired to survive, even without Mamma.
Catscan!!! I want to see some of those baby Seramas. I love those little ones. I have one banty Seabright and She is so cute and fiesty. I just love the little ones, I can't help myself.
Sorry Sew: It's not funny about Papa being color blind, but I could not help but laugh, as I also am color blind, besides being totally blind in my right eye. I always have to ask my wife to show me the green eggs as they look brown to me. It's very frustrating at times but it's life and we must learn to deal with afflictions. Hay
I always wonder what does a red color chicken look like to a color blind person. Does it look brown?
Oh Haystack... the ones Catscan has outside are so cute it is just crazy... They are so puffed out they look like lil ping pong balls! I hope she can get a pic.. They are just toooo cute..
It must be from rubbing under mom all the time.. but man they are puffy and fuzzy.. our TWTs can't do that good of a job. :)
My DH can't tell the dark colors apart. I always have to match his socks to his suits and he has me double check his ties. It helps that he has a memory like a steel trap. He remembers what color most of his ties are by the patterns. It's amazing when you consider he has about 200 ties.
Claire, being colored blind is not quite like it seems. I still drive and can tell red from green. It's generally light colors are not distinguishable. A light grey can be seen as maybe light blue, my green eggs look like a very soft brown, and often in a darker area they look purplish to me. A very soft green will look yellowish and viceversa. A dark blue green sock will look black to me, or a dark blue will look black. My wife while she doesn't say it I know from body language often feels sorry for me, but I don't. It's just life and I'm ok with it. When you are trying to match things, thats when it can be frustrating because normal people look at you, and just the look says (ar you crazy or something)LOL If it gives someone a good laugh, I'm all for it. Thats what I love about all of you on the forum, Your all a little goofy and that just makes me feel so normal. LOL Haystack
Thanks Haystack, for that great explanation! I learned something new today!
I find it interesting because there are so many different shades of green, from the bright green of grass to the blue greens of some conifers, the dark "hunter" green that is the color of my car, and then the light greens often referred to as "seafoam" or "mint" greens. Do all of those look like different shades of the same color to you, or do they all look sort of like different colors?
I'd love to know too.
{{I'm left and right color blind. I can't tell people left when I'm thinking and saying 'left'}}
Thats really a great question! For me the light colors generally confuse me. My wife will often say oh I love that and then name the color. I look all around and cannot identify what she is talking about, and will say don't know what (example car your talking about). Then she'll say something like right in front of your nose. But I can't identify the color correctly so I am totally confused what car she is talking about. After she goes over and touches the car, I say thats not grey thats blue, or thats not silver thats teal or what ever it looks like to me. Then I ask someone else and I find out I am generally wrong. I don't dare pick out my colors to match if I am going out in public, My poor wife goes crazy. Black and white, I can do that. LOL And I don't even want to talk about dark colors. Haystack
Yes, dad is only red and green color blind. Those colors appear grey to him (and Haystack, who knew?) He really can see shades of grey but can not tell the difference between the two at all. Maybe people have it to varying degrees. He was in the Air force working on planes when he found out. Good thing before he crossed wires. :/ One year he bought red mulch and was trying to find all the new green plants that were coming in. He loves to walk out and around every day to see how things are coming and if the rabbits are getting to his stuff. I had to go around with labeled sticks with arrows pointing to all his newbies. Just until he could see them when they were taller. Then he was fine. hehehe He is so funny.
That's fascinating. I guess if you always had it, then it's something you don't miss, but to me, I would be so muddled if the colors I see began changing. At least with things like traffic lights, even if you can't see red and green, you can see if the top or bottom light is lit up. Otherwise it could get dangerous out there!
Claire, Funny thing about that. There is an Irish section (Tip Hill) that has a traffic light with green on top. That could be dangerous for the people who have color blindness.
I guess dad will only have 3 babies out of the first 10 eggs. They were only the first batch after they put the roos in though. Fertility should be picking up as time marches on. There are about 6 eggs under that will be due...I think next week. I am hoping for better fertility because the roos had a week longer to get it together. hehehe
Thats interesting Sew, about how Papa found out. I went down to take my test for my pilots license when I found out. I was really angry to find out I could not fly after investing lots of money and time. I went out and bought a cheap plane and fixed it up and went flying anyway. Flew for years without a license. Bad boy. I have scars, lots of them on my head from running into things and my wife would always say watch where your going, but with my right eye gone and colors in some cases being so vague I just don't see many things. Oh well I get by and am very happy in life. Maybe I should always wear my motorcycle helmet. LOL. Haystack
Woah Haystack, I never knew you were such a rebel! Clearly I had underestimated you! I now stand corrected! Rock on!
Forget the biker helmet. They are too heavy and you are a man on the go. Get yourself a jockey's helmet. Tough as nails and light as a feather. They won't make your head sweat or block your field of vision either.
Flew without a license?!!! You rebel you. LOL I always wanted to be a chopper pilot but it never happened.
Looks like your broody hatched one of her own!
The mailman?
Yes, the little stinkers! I really am not suppose to have anymore babies though. I am going to ask dad to take it for me. :) My DH will have a fit if I have anymore in the house. :/
DH thinks we have enough now, with the chicks I plan to buy. We bought the incubator to hatch the eggs from my game hens.
What a crack up! Sneaker Think that's a good name? How cute!
Yes! Because thats what happened. They snuck one in with dads eggs. I better take a look tomorrow to see if there will be anymore surprises! hehehe I think its a NIKE :D
