A Question About High Speed

I have dial up only available. My phone Company called this evening and offered me High Speed dial up that is 12 times faster than my dial up and measured in increments of 512. I did not understand the name of the measurement. The price would be $29.95 a month with $10 off a month for a year if i sign a year contract. My DD says this is not internet High Speed at all and is not very good.

My question is.... Are there 2 kinds of High Speed and would i be better off going to Satelite HS.
