Please help me root my hoya Linearis.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hi, I got this h. Linearis from EA and as I expected because the nature of the plant it came in a big mess, soil and plant everywhere. i repotted the best I could, but I am losing lots of vines daily. So I am cutting and trying to root as much as I can. Has anyone had any luck rooting this plant? Thanks in advance Leah

I have been rooting my linearis in hydroponics...very easy this way.
Good luck!

I agree with Joni.. Thsi hoya rots easily...does not like wet!!!

I have an EA linearis that is doing well, although I've only had it a couple of months....however, I, as well, agree with Joni - hydroponics seems the way to go for linearis!

Hydroponics is good!!!! I rooted mine in a very open pot in hydroponics....as long as I didn't water from the top...it is great.

Ted Green got a beautiful linearis from a friend on this forum....he hangs it outdoors in the sun, it gets rained on and is putting out new growth!!!! all over. Go figger!!

Ive rooted this little devil in normal hoya mix and Spaghnum Moss in ziplock bags.....both ways it roots easily, the problem is to keep it alive after......!!
Didnt do too well in a heated propagator, and the tips are the hardest to root, in my opinion..cut the lengths into 3 or 4 sets of leaves long, and I find it roots better if the stem is just hardening off, rather than fresh new growth

I've acquired 2 linearis this year. I have kept one in the house and one in the greenhouse and both are (knock on wood) doing ok. I'm letting them go bone dry, watering from the top making sure to soak the plant, completely drain the saucer and then squeezing on the pot to keep the soil from packing together.

I have read that several people water from the bottom. I assume you guys remove the saucer and place the plant in a bowl? It seems like you could not get enough water in the saucer that connects to the pot.

Babysalem, Is your plant already on the decline? I find that once the EA plants show they are on the road to destruction/death, it is darn near impossible to root them. Try to find non wilted stems and make sure sap in running when you make a cut. It is also good to look for little aerial roots on the cuttings you try to root.

Carol, have you used the hydro to grow on a linearis or do you just use it for rooting? I am wondering how it does long term when the roots grow to the bottom of the pot and sit in water all the time.

I water my H. linearis when the pot is light and dry...I never keep the saucers on the pots, anyway, so I put the hoya in a deep dish and add water to the dish until the top of the hoyas pot is wet...then I hang it up to drip.

There is another small pot with linearis growing in semi hydro, and I water from the bottom too.... Other plants I have growing in hydro seem to stop putting roots out when the roots find the moisture they want....

Thanks everybody for the info. By hydroponic you all mean growing in plain water, right? I guess there is several ways to grow that is called hydroponic. So I have several cuttings in plain water and several more in soil that I dipped in rooting hormone, and put in a mix of about 50% perlite and 50% ea soil, wich I have in my make shift green house with bottom heat. I think ther reason that the vines are declining is because the roots dried out or the stem was bent and the rest of the vine didn't receive ample water.

BF5 - there is a long thread about growing hydroponically and semihydroponically....cant be too far back. There are pictures and explanations galore...you might go there.... I am racing out the door or I would look it up for you.

Happy Monday Everybody, today is 4-6-09 . On Saturday April 4 2009. I made lots of cuttings I'd say more then 20, I dipped the end in rooting hormone and put it in a 50/50 mix of ea soil and perilite. I then put it in my makeshift greenhouse(msgh) bottom heat, the pot of linearis is on top of another pot that is upside down. It remains close to same temp and humidity in my msgh at all times probably only a 10* drop at night. I checked today and the cutting that I pulled out has a root that is all most a 1/4in long. The other cuttings that I checked have more resistance, so I bet the roots may be longer. The ones I put in water are in a east facing glass block window and have no roots. I also started them before I started this thread wich was 4-2.
My makeshift gh is a 40 gal high fish tank that I bought because I want to expand my fish collection, and planted fishtank wich is 80gal. After I bought the 40gal used for $30.00 I had buyers remorse. I was going to use it to put my blue crayfish in, but decided for the time I will make better use of it as a greenhouse. My crayfish is fine with all the other fish and plants for now. Althought it has destroyed most my plants and has eaten some fish. Thanks all of you. Leah

Leah,
So your linearis put out roots in 2 days? Great growing!

Yes Joni. Thank you. It seems unbelievable, I have had polyneuras root like that to, it must have something to do with living in AZ. My house also has huge windows with little obstruction. My msgh is upstairs and there is nothing blocking the sun, from the windows and it is 80* in the room it is in. The ones that I am trying to root in water are downstairs in my room where it stays cooler. Leah
