I have mentioned that I've never grown ANYTHING before, right? :-) So forgive my ignorance. I got a late start and direct sowed almost everything because it's plenty warm here in the desert already. Because I didn't know what kind of germination success rate to expect, I planted several seeds.
Yesterday this bag of zucchini just showed dirt. Today I came home to this. Every single seed sprouted. Now, I'm pretty sure with zucchini I can only have one plant in a 5 gallon bag, right? I hear they grow like weeds down here!
How many plants in a grow bag?
Oh, and muskmelon. Looks like every seed is sprouting there too. Can I leave two of those in a bag?
Jake you can only grow one zucchini per 5 gallon grow bag. Your lettuces "might" do two to a planting area in your stackers, but otherwise only one lettuce per pot area. Muskmelons you can do one per grow bag and either trellis it or let it grow down to the ground.
Sorry my friend that you are soon to learn the pain of thinning...It's a horrible thing............you can hear them squeal as you pull them to their demise, LOL!
Yeah, I just found where it says those lettuces should be 6" apart.
My first children, and I have to kill most of them. Ack!
You could also transplant the seedlings that you thin.
That's so crazy it might just work. LOL
DesertJake please keep us posted of your progess using those grow bags in this climate. I am using e-buckets with coir for the first time this year. I keep getting told they will heat up too much in the summer but I am going to shield the bucket when the temp starts to stay in the 90's. Heres hopeing for coir sucess in the hostile desert.
I am worried about the coming heat, especially since my plants are on concrete!
I did put one bag inside a larger pot on top of a loose layer of packing peanuts, thinking that might insulate it somewhat. I may do that to more of them, or something to get all the bags off the ground a bit.
I use 15 gallon Easi-lift grow bags. Three squash per bag didn't work. One is enough. Same with lemon cukes, Bhut Jolokia peppers, Tango and Udmalbet eggplant.
I went to Lowes and got what is called a light defuser grid that goes over long lights in the ceiling . It is about 30" by 40'"and rigid plastic with 1/2"sq. holes in it. I then place it on bricks and put my bags on it. It is pricy but should last a long time and keep every thing up off the cement plus allow air circulation

Devota, that does work. I've done it many times. Depends somewhat on what you are thinning and how careful you are.
