Need some suggestions!!

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

my back yard is surrounded by woods i would like to keep it from closing in on us - so I was thinking about coming in about 10 feet from woods and planting some loropetalum (Burgandy) I want to be able to cut behind whatever I plant to keep woods at bay- my problem is I am not sure how to plant them the property is not straight accross so that is not a problem, but I am trying to figure out if I should stagger them or maybe mix them with some other type of plant - appreciate your suggestions - privacy is not necessary just would like to make a nicer look. It's a total of about 200' Zone 8 - gets mostly sun
