Hi David,

I know this is not a hibiscus but If you see this, Here is what I bought that they called a Purple Brug or angel trumpet plant. It's label just says purple. It has some buds but I thought you or someone could help identify the bush if they have seen or have it.

Time to go to work!

oops I forgot 1.
Here is the dupont seedling on its 2nd day. Cross is Barry Schlueter x Fantasy Charm. Its faded some. I crossed black dragon with her yesterday. Maybe it will take. We will see.

Have a great day,
Robert

I do think you have a Dat. maybe purple swirl. Stem is dark and the blooms will point upward. Brugs will hang down usually. Never seen a purple brug so bet that is what you have. They make a large seed pod with many seeds. Grow easy from seed. Don't let the dog eat these blooms as they will make him very sick.

OMG, love that Smokey Mountain. addictions are not good......

Thanks david,

Just emailed you. You've answered my question here. I'll keep abby away from these LOL They don't smell so good so I think she will stay away herself!

Take Care,
Robert

Hey Robert! Beautiful blooms - I LOVE that group shot, and Abby is just too cute for words!! I'm glad you have nice Erin Rachael blooms, even if there isn't leaves, lol. Mine has no leaves either, but they're finally starting to come out a little bit :-)

Hey, I've got a basket question for you: Would Untamed Heart be better in a basket because if it's floppy blooms? What do you think?

I definitely agree that your plant is a Datura - you're gonna love the flowers though, they are really pretty :-)

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey Karen & David,

Thanks for the kind words. I'm wondering if all of them are Datura. They said they were brugs but ya know how some of these nurseries are. If I take a PIC could y'all tell by the leaves with your expertise. I know hibbies and these are just not my thing yet. I want to be sure they are labeled right.

Thanks,
Robert

Hey karen,

Untamed heart grows great in a basket. Just cut it back for max branching.. Here is one labeled white.

this one says yellow. It will really upset me if they are all datura. I'll have to leave just awesome feedback on the nursery... LOL Hopefully they will all be pretty but I wanted brugs. It's woody at the bottom, you can see where it's been cut.

Your pink, yellow and white look like brugs from here. The woody stem is the normal. Bet they grow more tree like as it seems like the cutting was below the Y. Sent you an e-mail.

That picture with all the blooms is just startlingly beautiful! Did you pick those blooms today?

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks David,

Hi Fla_chick,

Thanks for the kind words. I took them today. I had 7 blooms on the bush of swamp music and I plucked 4 to cross with others. Black Dragon will not set seed so I used the pollen for a couple of other crosses. Curly top I used the pollen on those for crosses.

Take care,
Robert

Nice photos as usual Robert. The other ones look like Datura to me also. I grew some Ballerina Series Datura from seed last year..and boy are they fast growers and spreaders. I do recall reading somewhere that Brugs are actually banned plants in 10 or so states...I think. I think that people actually smoke the leaves and....you know what. LOL Oh well, so you better keep Abby away from the Brugs and out of "The Swamp".

The intoxicating canine allure of Hibiscus "Swamp Music". I just had to post this picture my brother had sent to me recently of his dog's (Chloe) infatuation with Hibiscus "Swamp Music" also Robert. Too funny.

Oh how funny!!! Swamp Music is like catnip for dogs, LOL!!

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

I guess so!!! The new claim could be "4 out of 5 dogs prefer Swamp Music over over leading cultivators".

Jon

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Jon,

Too Funny!!! Must me something there!!! She likes them all but just loves this one and will go to it first. She will literally try to jump in the big pot to get a bloom. Must be their keen sense of smell and this 1 particular bloom. Maybe we can tell Robert over at Dupont your new slogan for "Swamp Music" LOL BTW I'll definitely keep her away from the brugs and Dat.

Take Care,
Robert

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

I think so Robert. I just can't stop laughing about it. What are the odds that out of all the cultivators the two dogs would pick the same one. NOW I know why my brothers says it's not blooming as much lately. Dog beat em to it!!!
Oh god

Once mine starts blooming, we'll see if my dog, Sadie, tries to eat it too, lol :-)

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

So if Karen's Sadie trys it you can revamp the slogan "In clinical trials from coast to coast more dogs prefer "Swamp Music" Hibiscus cv over another cv. or something like that LOL

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Exactly LOL. I meant to type "4 Out Of 5 Dogs Prefer Swamp Music Over Other Leading Cultivators"...but I think y'all figured that out. Just the name "Swamp Music" cracks up my brothers neighbors. It is quite "catchy".

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

You all are making me want a Swamp Music just to see how my dogs react to it... well.. I love the bloom too! My dogs don't take any interest in anything else I have.

Robert.. there are no purple brugs.. nothing close to purple in brugs... the woody stems are usually brugs.. they are perineals where daturas are annuals. Brugs can grow and look like annuals with a more green stem but as they age they turn more woody. Daturas grow true from seed... brugs are like Hibiscus.. they are hybrids and each seed is different. fun to hybridize brugs but I have no luck because of my cold winters... I don't get seed pods.
