Anyone using coir in their mix?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Just bought a block of coconut coir for my seed growing adventures. I'm wondering if anyone puts coir in their AV potting mix? From all I've read about it, seems like my av's would like it. Welcome opinions and experiences :)

Just found a not-so-very-old thread on this subject:

Sorry for the repeat :( But is anyone trying it now?

Not yet, but I've been thinking about it. I only have a small window to get to the local hydroponics store, though, so haven't been able to get any more . . . I keep blinking and missing the window! Friday is my goal . . . taking a half day off work. Not to go to the store, but I will on my way home . . .

OH &*(*%$#@!!

I've been waiting for 6 weeks to get that little packet of Weismoor strep seeds. They finally arrived today and they are tiny as dust. So I'm oh-so-careful and try to get them laying on the mix in a little cup. I think I got them all in there. Then I turn around with the cup in my hand to say something to my son and SPLAT! I dump the whole thing on the ground. Arghhhhh! And since they need to "lay on the soil" there's no use trying to put it back in the cup and grow it out. WHAAAAA!

Oh, you could still try . . . maybe if you spread the mix out on a styrofoam plate - so it's a thin layer . . . then put the plate into a gallon baggie . . .

Thanks, syrumani, but it's too late...I dumped it all in the compost bucket. Guess I should have waited until my head cleared... When I swept it up it was about 23% dog hair anyway. Geeze, I need to clean up around here!

Awww....:-(

OH NO!!!! I've done the same thing with seeds.Knocked baggies full of seed cups right off the shelf. I hope you can get more seeds with out such a long wait.

Oh, I'm so sorry! I'm so goofy I probably would have sown it dog hair and all in the hopes one or two might sprout.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Lynn, that probably would have been better...dang it.

I'm having one of those extra klutzy days. I've dropped, tossed, missed and ran-into so much stuff today. If I was thinking straight (which I obviously am not) I wouldn't have even tried planting today. Or at least stick with big seeds. Man, those strep seeds are tiny!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

It seems like most Gessie seeds are teeny tiny.Doncha' just hate it when you have one of 'those' days!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I have days like that also...more and more often. I find it extremely frustrating, and by the end of the day, I want to throw things through the window. I'm not growing old gracefully--I'm growing old kicking and screaming! The good news is...I'm still growing!

LOL...I do the same and my DH gets so frustrated with himself he is always walking around calling himself a dumb &#!%* !

We should start a club Lynn...LOL

I think there are quite a few here who would join us Jan. ^_^

Closest hydroponics store I can find for you is in Fargo . . . I can pick a small brick up for you on Friday, if you want . . . or I can send you a chunk of one I get for myself, if you just wanted to try it . . .

Highland, IL

I do have one not too far from me. I have seeds and other veggies growing in coir. I am going this week because I ran out and I have to get more anyway, if anyone would want try it. Syrumani, I did break one up, I had to use a serrated knife, they are a little tough to cut through. If you get them a little moist first it is a lot easier to separate.

i would like to just try it,see if its good in my system, thanks
i really appeciate it

I sure am liking it so far with my seeds. It's makes a nice, fluffy mix. I'm so tired of dried out peat and compacted potting mix, even though I dump all kinds of perlite in my mix. I haven't put any of my av's in it yet though. I'm still kinda waiting for someone else to do it! LOL
