What Island was the picture taken on?

It was taken on Kauai

Thanks Kennedyh. With glabrous leaves from Kaua'i Island your plant is Metrosideros polymorpha var. glaberrima!

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

Thanks for that information Metrosideros. Should we create a separate entry for Metrosideros polymorpha var. glaberrima and get the picture moved across?

There are eight varieties of Metrosideros polymorpha across the State of Hawai'i.

If you wanted to separate the varieties on PF I could track down the varieties found here and show photos of their differences.

Thanks Dave,

I have created a page for Metrosideros polymorpha var. glaberrima here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/183945/
and have asked admin to move my images to that page. Could you check whether you can add any more details to the plant.

It would be great if you could create entries for all the remaining varietries of Metrosideros polymorpha and especially so if you can get photos of many of them

Hi Ken, I added what I could at this time. I will find some photos for the variety in this area. I'll put together entries for other varieties as I have time and am thinking about it.

The descriptions of the varieties of Metrosideros polymorpha, and other Hawaiian Metrosideros, are from: Wagner, W.L., et al. 1999. "Manual of the Flowering Plants of Hawai'i."

Thank you both! The photos have been moved to the new entry.

It appears that there may be a lot of synonyms to this entry. Do you both agree on them? I can add the 5 most frequently used ones to the entry, but the rest would have to be added in the comment section of the entry.

These synonyms are per the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) http://www.itis.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt

Metrosideros collina var. glaberrima (Levl.) Rock
Metrosideros collina var. glabrifolia (Heller) Rock
Metrosideros collina var. haleakalensis Rock
Metrosideros collina var. hemilanata Hochr.
Metrosideros polymorpha ssp. glaberrima (Levl.) Skottsberg
Metrosideros polymorpha ssp. glabrifolia (Heller) Skottsberg
Metrosideros polymorpha var. glabrifolia (Heller) St. John
Metrosideros polymorpha var. haleakalensis (Rock) St. John
Metrosideros polymorpha var. hemilanata (Hochr.) St. John
Metrosideros polymorpha var. nuda Skottsberg
Metrosideros polymorpha var. parviflora Skottsberg
Metrosideros polymorpha var. sericea (Rock) Skottsberg

Let me know what you think.

Keaau, HI

Hi Joan, all of those synonyms are included in our Hawaiian Flora. The Hawaiian Metrosideros have also previously been included in Nania.

Thanks Dave! So, if we have to pick 5 of the most referenced synonyms to add to the entry so they show up in a PlantFile search, which would those be? I can add them to the entry and list the rest in a comment (which wouldn't be searchable).

Keaau, HI

Hi Joan, I don't know if five of them could be considered used often. The following are ones that I am most used to.

Metrosideros collina subsp. polymorpha var. glaberrima
Metrosideros collina subsp. polymorpha var. glabrifolia
Metrosideros polymorpha subsp. glaberrima
Metrosideros polymorpha subsp. glabrifolia
Metrosideros polymorpha subsp. polymorpha var. nuda

Thanks! I added those to the entry and added an editors note referencing the ITIS synonyms. There's some variation in there, but I think we have all the bases covered now.
