Containers used...

OK... This looked like a good topic to cover again, as it was just mentioned in a couple of threads.

I know that most people start their plants out in cups of different sorts, and some even leave them in cups... but what do you use for larger plants or when you pot up, etc.?

I really like the Misco pots... sometimes called self-watering pots or Spa planters. I find them at Wal-mart in various sizes and I think they work great for the gessie plants. I am currently trying to get all my episcias into them. I put a layer of perlite in the bottom and them my potting mix, and because of the water reservoir, it's kind of like wicking... maybe more like the texas potting method. My episcias are happy though!

Here's a couple shots of the pot...

And the bottom, to show info... (no doubt they have a website out there too)

This is episcia 'Unpredictable Valley' in a medium sized pot (domed with a bubble bowl)

This is 'Teddy Bear' in the smaller pot... I would call it a 4" pot, but the bottom says 5.2"

Tell us what YOU use!

:o)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks for letting us know those are working well for you! I'd wondered, but hadn't tried them yet...

most recently, I've potted up a few miniature trailers (moved the mature plants to bigger pots, then rooted and potted up some suckers), and I like bonsai containers for those (you can get them in smaller or wider sizes, and they're still shallow, which the mini's need).

Very nice Episcias!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Nice, and creative Rose--Ilike the bubble bowl --and that episcia is very pretty! I'll have to take a look at those. I just use what ever I can find around my living space...given the cultural needs of the plant.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

i also bought one of the self watering from walmart for my varigated saxorum, i am not real pleased with it as my other wicked plants seem to do better, but i thought i would try 1.

I really like those Misco pots and will have to see if they are available. Of course I love the episcia UPV and they creative way you have it planted with the bubble bowl on top.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

I'll have to check Walmart out.So far the only covered containers I have come up with are my giant Easter eggs.I left some of them whole and put a good sized hole in the top of others to see what works best.

Highland, IL

The smallest ones at our Walmart was a 9" a couple of weeks ago. I havent' checked back since then would love to get a hanging 6" or so for my guppie plant.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've never seen a really small hanging one, but they've usually got 4 and 6 inch free standing pots... you could always drill holes just under the rim for a wire or rope hanger...

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Do check Family Dollar for the Misco Spa Pots-- they had the hanging ones here for $2 at ---WM they were $10

These types of pots seem like they would work for us "over-waterers".

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

My Family Dollar didn't have them!

:o(

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Mine was out, but if they get more In I can send you some if you want.jlmk

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks Gran... that's OK. I'll keep a look out in my area. They'll show up somewhere I'm sure.
I'm gonna stop by Big Lots this week too.

But thank you again for your consideration!

:o)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Last month, Ollie's Discount Barn (similar to Big Lots) had some self-watering AV pots for $5 each, but they were huge, much too big for most AVs, but I still got a bunch figuring they'd be perfect for ferns, gingers, anything that likes constant moisture. I often find bigger planters there for good prices, too.

I have all my Hoyas in these "Plant Spa" pots from Wal Mart. They do very well in them for me.

I also have lots of my streps planted in these. I want to get some more this spring for more of my streps that need to be potted up.

I've only seen them at Wal Mart here in Idaho.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I can only find the larger ones at Wal-Mart now...
Can't find the 4-5" size ANYWHERE, and I've been searchin'!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think I saw 6 inch ones at our WalMart the other day, but no 4 inch ones.
