Is it normal for the bales to start turning a dark color?Last week I noticed an odor somewhat like horse manure( I haven't added any yet). We've had several days rain this week and yesterday I took some compost material out to the worms and the bales are turning a blackish color around the edges
bales changed color
That just means they are starting to decompose. Exactly what you want!

thanks Doug
I set these bales up over an old compost pile I had before I enlarged my garden spot, they were some older bales that had been wet but were dry when I got them.I don't plan on planting for another 2 weeks as we almost always have an easter freeze here. I took these pics earlier this week before "the flood" I've collected a little over 300 gallons of rain water in the last 2 days
fremar, I would stake the ends of the rows so when they decomose more they don't fall apart on the ends.
Doug
I had noticed the ends looked a little looser this week.I have some 1"x12" boards and could fashion some stakes from 1/2 EMT that I have laying around
Thanks Doug
