Do I need to purchase a new Processor????

Help please. I finally took the big step yesterday and tried to convert from AOL to Bell Sympatico DSL. The fellow came to install and said he couldn't do it as there was no ethernet card. I have no idea what that is - this should be the first clue to all of you that I know nothing about the actual workings of computers.
My question is this.... would it be better for me to purchase a new Processor at this time rather than just purchasing the ethernet card?I have Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 1.70GHz and a Genuine Intel D845GLLY Motherboard. They were purchased in 2003.
