Zoysia

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Has anyone had any experience plugging in Zoysia grass? I am asking this after I have already ordered some plugs to try. I have a sloping area that isn't growing much between my yard and the golf course and behind a bed. I thought I would try the Zoysia. Sounds too good to be true. Is it? :O)

I don't know but my DH and I have talked about trying some for our yard here from what he has read it sounds like a good bet but I have to find where to get it without costing me a lot
let me know how it goes for you please

Hi Bonnie,
I know the extension center was testing some grasses a few years ago. You might want to give them a call. As long as the ads have been running about the zoysia, they might have the answer you need.

Zoysia does well here in Florida. Doesn't need much extra water, but, it is like all lawn grasses - needs some care.

If it weren't so invasive I would say try Dwarf Bermuda.

A 'new' plant in the marketplace is http://www.flickr.com/photos/30349464@N02/2843766103/ the State is planting it in the highway medians and it doing well. Less mowing than turf and it is very deeply rooted.

I have a friend that has just put in zoysia sod, but too early to know how it will do.

Thanks everyone for your input. I ordered mine from an ad in my BHG magazine. It was pretty cheap. Comes in squares scored so it can be cut in 1" plugs. I got 200 plugs plus 100 free for $18. Of course planting those 300 1" plugs is going to be fun I know. In this case I don't really care if it takes a while to grow as long as it just does and fills in the area. It is supposed to be a fast grower though.

Annette,
Out of all those cuttings I made from your trailing Rosemary I have one that is green and growing. All the others bit te dust over the winter!

Bonnie, you're always welcome to get more. I am able to do more around here, now!

Thanks I may do that. Right now I have been cleaning out beds and pruning stuff and today I actually planted out two of my WS containers which contained plants that were getting pretty tall. They were seeds kindly sent to me by Joeswife. Hope I didn't jump the gun!!
