I just wanted to let you all know that wave petunias are very invasive here. I have been trying to kill the stuff for about 5 years now. I recently sprayed it with brush killer and it didn't even do anything to it.
Wave Petunias!!!!!!!!
Well who knew? Thanks for the heads up but I suspect some will think you are the luckiest gardener alive. :-)
Not when it chocks out your other plants. It almost killed some last year. So then I have to go out and dig and dig trying to get it away from my other plants.
Smokey, you are referring to the variety sold by Park Seed touted as "tireless bloomer spreads 2 to 3 feet" SEEDS selling for 40 cents apiece, right? If so I wish I had your problem!! For 2 years I wasted my money buying PLANTS and have yet to get decent growth or even "tired" (let alone tireless) bloom.
No, this was actual plants I bought at Lowe's. Come on down and you can dig till you can't dig anymore. I am in Piedmont. LOL
there's more than one kind of "wave" petunias. are you talking about the 'trailing' small flowered species that folks have recently been selling? or the giant flowered "wave" which someone told me is a hybrid that 's supposed to be sterile?
This plant doesn't trail. The roots run everywhere. I started it in a long planter that was a few inches off the ground on the bottom shelf of a bench. The roots grew out the bottom and into the flower bed. I started trying to pull it up the next year when it was coming up all over the bed. Then I started spraying it with roundup. I tried digging it up. The more I tried to get rid of it the more came up. After about 5 yrs. I am still fighting it. No it does not have giant flowers.
You got it from Lowes! How many times have I seen labels that I know were wrong on their offerings? I have dreams (yeah I led a dull life) of something like this happening when I buy an unfamiliar plant from them; I get what I think (according to the label) will be a beauty and it turns out to be an invader from outer space. My luck, the plant monster would survive and all known beauties would struggle just to live.
I sprayed those things 2 days before it rained with Brush Killer. I went out today and a few close to the house are BLOOMING!!!!!! SOMEBODY HELP ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need a picture, it would be intereting to see what kind of Petunia you really do have; it certainly does not sound a true Wave.

Ball Horticulture would probably be interested in your findings.

The Wave Petunias do spread pretty well in my garden. I am in upstate SC too. I do not consider them invasive however. They do root themselves on the long trailing vines and they do reseed. This is the 4th year that they have returned but each year there are less of them. I will post a picture of the pink one that I have. This pic is from 2007. They were no where near this big last year.
this is fascinating, since I'm in zone 7a and never had Waves in anything but a hanging basket. always thought they were sterile.
I read today that the native, trailing petunia is one of the Wave's parents. Perhaps yours reverted.
