Hi All,
Ok I am not the best person who can give directions to but I will try.... Some of you have asked how I grow streps in water? So I will try to tell you how I do this... I have a much better success rate doing it this way then starting in any other medium. So here goes...
First I take a solo cup and it depends on the size of the cutting... If it is big then I use a big plastic cup. If it is a smaller cutting I use a small solo cup... The one I am going to show you is a small solo...
Opps be right back I forgot to resize the pictures... see what I mean??? Brain dead...LOLOL
Hugs,
Susan

Starting Streps in Water
Ok back again... Here is a picture of the solo cup. I lable it. Then I take a leaf and put it in the cup and put fertalized water and cover 1/4 of the bottom of the leaf . I put them under my lights on the top shelf... I check the leaf every so many days...Now if water gets low put more in as needed. If the water turns green I take the cup and leaf to the sink and clean the cup and rinse the leaf very softly... I then put back into clean fertalized water and under lights... Some cutting root really easy others take longer... I find in about two weeks I have roots on many... It is important that you keep the water clean but if you forget it don't sweat just clean when you can. I am showing a picture of a cup I had to cut down as I did not have a smaller one.... I also only put 1 or 2 streps per cup.. If I put more they tend to rot.... The picture above is holding more only because they were no named ones I put together to bring into the living room....
Hugs,
Susan

Ok so you now have roots... I then take the cup it was in and I cut slits on two sides of the cup for drainage... I then put 1/2 perlite and then the soil I use to put my streps in... Pro mix and Perlite. Ok so the next couple of picture are of the cups.

Thanks Susan,
I'm going to try it.Does the bottom of the leaf have to have any stem attached?
Lynn
if you leave a little stem rather then a big stem they seem to root better... They also root without any stem....

Susan
Susan, I printed this whole thing, so next time I will try your method. Thank you. mortswife
You are more then welcome... I am not saying that I have not lost cuttings but out of like 40 leaves I may lose 5 where as if they were in soil/perlite I lose more then half.... I will say that Leaf has helpped me in putting leaves into a light soil mix and this is the first time they are still alive and looking well after two weeks maybe....

Susan
Thanks Susan for all the time and effort showing your method of water rooting. I'm sure it will be very helpful showing another way to be successful at propagating streps.
Your leaves in the box look great! I know you stuck those directly without water rooting first.
Thanks so much Susan for showing all of this, this should really help us that lose alot of leaves to rot, actually you can do bothe with 1 leaf,i am trying it.

Yes Leaf, those were never in water... I cut them let them sit for a few then put into the box... With your help.... Thanks ^_^

Nice propagation tutorial Susan^_^
Gosh, Susan, what a good tutorial......I haven't tried in water but I might just do it for the fun and see if I can make the roots come like you do.........
Thanks Susan, you did a nice job of explaining and the pictures are all easy to follow. One thing I do when I put more than one leaf variety to root in the same place, is I use the sharpie marker and write the name on the leaf...some are easier to write on than others. I've only recently had some success in starting strep leaves. The first one I ever started, Echo, about 2 1/2 yrs ago is the only one I've had the best results with that it grew, multiplied and produced 3 plants that have been blooming. Most have rotted although I've tried several ways to get them to root, water had never occured to me! I think I'll try that today, it looks fun! Take care! tish
I am going to try a new mix today for sticking leaves. Going to try 1/4 Volkmann's wicking and 3/4 perlite in a shoe box and saran on the top. Have been using 1/4 peat and 3/4 perlite...........
Thank you so very much for the tutorial. It is just what I needed. I hope to have better luck with this method. I really appreciate your time and effort to post this. Lou
i might try this, would help when i get things in and dont have time to set them
JIM
Another tip I forgot is if the leaf is off a smaller strep and the leaf is turning over in the cup I tap the top of the strep to the cup... This way it stays up instead of sinking into the cup... I hope some of you get some to grow this way... I really have Kim to thank for this as she tried it awhile back with one or two streps... Glad you all liked it...
Hugs,
Susan
Turtle,
I'm going to try it tomorrow!
Lynn
Turtle Chi Ninja Girl I have planted a brunch of my Leave in dirt now most had roots the one that had so many after 2 months was Alisa That went fast
Thank you HUgs
Dimmer
Just have to tell you I think I will be closing on the house on the 9th of April
Congrats Kim!!
ive heard of people doing this before,i even know of a business that does that just when they have a hard time rooting leaves, congrats on your new place kim,im really happy for you,
JIM
Success and not! I did 9 leaves in water like Susan does. The only thing different I did was put them in baggies with water, and hung them off the plantstand. 5 out of 9 rooted. The others rotted I think from sitting on the bottom of the bag.Next time I will the zip up baggies and use the zipper to hold the leaf up and off the bottom. The leaves were put in the water on 4-2
