Hay bale disaster.

Mobile, AL(Zone 8b)

I was so exicited to get my hay bales yesterday. I bought 10, brought them home and layed them out in what I thought was a safe place. I watered them real good. I woke up this morning only to find that I had 5 bales left. The cows next door pushed the fence back and ate 5 of them. The bales were $3.00 each so I just wasted $15.00. I planned to plant them in about a month so at least I did not lose the plants. The place I put them was the only place they would get full sun. I managed to scrape up 3 wooden produce crates full. Do you think I will have any luck planting in them?

Betty: I can see the headlines now in the Cookeville paper:

BOVINES BITE BALES BADLY!

Pack the crates as tight as you can and use them like a container garden. Will probably work just as well.

Betty ,Kent the loose hay would work for taters..Right.???

tubbytee: definitely think the loose hay would make a good tater bed, but they'll probably need to "cook" first, just like a normal bale.

Sorry for your pain, but thanks for the giggle.
