(Near) Freeze this Friday

Kendalia, TX

Yikes! My weatherbug predicts mid-30's this Friday! Not good: usually it is cooler than predicted. Guess I'll be covering my tomatos and brugs. . .
Kendalia

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

I heard. Supposed to get to 37° here Friday night. Hopefully it won't freeze!

Kendalia, TX

Dang! Tornado watch too!

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Supposed to be 50% chance tonight here, with possibility of severe storms, wind and hail. Possible tornados, especially be careful if you're along Highway 71 or up by the Lake LBJ area.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I gues my attitude now is ... if it freezes it freezes. I just don't think I can haul all my plants back into the greenhouse and cover everything again. My brugs in containers have blooms and are too large to fit back inside the greenhouse now. They are in huge containers becaaquse I repotted them. I have knocked most of the lime and lemon blooms as well as tiny limes and lemons off my plants moving them in and out. The tomato plants will have to fend for themselves because I have to use a dolly to move their containers. The weather people have been wrong about the rain we were supposed to have gotten today so I am hoping that they are wrong about Friday night's weather. I have been raking oak leaves for 3 days straight and my arms feel like they are about to fall off.:o) The only plants I will protect are my begonias. They tend to melt fairly quickly in a freeze. I'm just going to pray a lot.

H, I can't blame you! I have a lot less stuff to cover, so I went ahead and did it. (JUst put pots over stuff.) Chances are it won't freeze in town. But it is more likely to freeze out here near Kendalia, and even here the prediction was just "mid 30's, " and now, looking again, it says "upper 30's"! So it PROBABLY won't freeze. . .

We are under a tornado watch now and have had 3 in of rain since yesterday. It's raining now. I watched the weather out of Dallas which is over two hrs ne of us. They said the Panhandle is under a blizzard warning for Sat. Snow flurries possible along the counties near the Red River. Local weather folks are saying 39°-41° here. They were wrong last time. We didn't get as cold as they said we would. I'm hoping they are wrong this time too.

I will take my brugs into the workshop just in case. I'm just counting the days before I can put them in the ground without worries like this. I might put the surfinia in the GH. The other pots are just too big to move. I repotted them last weekend. So......If there is no frost, they should be ok. I may cover them with old sheets. I just can't bear the thought of losing all the growth I protected all winter, this late in the game. Arrrrggg! This better be the last hurrah.

Oakwood (Butler,TX), TX(Zone 8b)

Texasgrower,
your about 30 miles east of me ...
I sure hope it doesnt freeze I spent the afternoon putting out some of my onions & tomatoes ...
Here in Butler/Oakwood area its calling for 36 on Sat. guess ill cover everything up .:(

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

The prediction for Saturday night is 39ºF. My plants are still in the greenhouse because I've been too busy with ranch duties to move them outdoors. For once, procrastination is on my side. I had given up on getting rain today so I went to put hay out for the girls.and to show the new helper where to put the creep feed for the heifers. By the time I got back inside I was soaking wet and chilled to the bone.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I think the weather people were doing drugs on today's forecast! All that talk and we didn't even get a breeze, much less a drop of rain or severe thunderstorms. Now it'll be a long time before I believe anything they say.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Our lakehouse is at Lake LBJ and they got golf/tennis ball-sized hailstorm this evening. We're going up in the morning to take a look at the "new roof" we had put on. Here, all we got was wind and glorious rain!!!

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

Forecast says 35 Friday night and 31 Saturday! I'll cover what I've already put in pots, but anything in the ground is going to have to fend for itself.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Click2Weather.com shows going down to 48 Friday night and 44 Saturday night.
I sure hope that's right!!!! Way cooler than I'd like but I pray it doesn't freeze!!!!

oh NO! I just entered my zip code and it DOES say lows in the 40s Friday night and UPPER 30s Saturday night, and also UPPER 40s for Sunday night!!! Oh MY!!!

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

I know , I know. It's like anything with a 30 puts me into a tizzy. The stuff in pots and in the ground can fend for itself. My little MG sprouts I'll cover and hope for the best. The tomatos and peppers are still in their little pots. Haven't had a chance to plant them. Good thing too. I'll take them out of the gh and put them in the workshop. There just won't be enough in the gh to bother heating.

We got rain almost all night. But it warmed up today and the sun is out. I hope the wrens and chickadees can keep their eggs warm enough over the weekend. The hummers are here too. A tad cold for them. I wonder if I'll find one in topor.

Maybe it won't get as cold as expected. I think the trees in our yard provide cover. We're never as cold as Palestine itself gets.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

I went out to the garden(s) today and had a look around after I got off work. Sigh.
I have SO many little babies just poking their little heads out of the ground. I'll just be SICK if I lose all those!

Just getting to the point I was so proud of the progress in the garden, few tragedies or disappointments.
Oh PLEASE don't kill all my babies!!!

My Orchid Tree and Redbuds have JUST started leaving out--finally! I even have a banana pepper from last year that has little leaves coming up from the base--can you believe that?! And my new Lantana camara out front has finally begun to show some new leaves.

The Lemon Queen sunflowers I put out last weekend are up, as are my cukes, purple hulls, and asparagus long beans. My sage has started to come back, as well as my Plumbago, Esperanza, Thai Basil....

Oh Lordy! Am I gonna have to cover all those new tomatoes and peppers the DH & I just put in the garden last weekend?! My painted fern?

Big sigh.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

I had to get up to take some Advil and looked at the weather forecast for Friday and Saturday nights. The forecast has been revised downward. Arrrrgh! They've lowered it to 41ºF for tonight and down to 36ºF for Saturday night. It'll be close to freezing Saturday night since it's usually 2ºF - 3ºFs lower because I'm out in the country. I'll have to turn the heaters in the greenhouses back on. The citrus trees I have in the ground have very tender new shoots all over. Sigh!

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

Still shows 35 for tonight and 31 for tomorrow for us. I'll cover what's on the patio, but everything else will have to fend for itself. Azaleas are just ready to burst, hope the buds don't all freeze.

Kendalia, TX

Dang! 38 tonight and 33 tomorrow night, which, for me, means it is likely to freeze. I'll be covering stuff this evening--while the high winds blow, which also predicted. Whinging helps.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Prediction is 40° tonight and 38° tomorrow here. I like the NWS site where if you really try hard enough you can get a forecast for your neighborhood by clicking on a little map set for the nearest town. Then bookmark that and you've always got your local forecast. BTW, these temps are normal for this time of year, if you think about it. It's still March!

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

I could cry! We have at least 2 or 3 citrus trees, blooms on one and on a peach tree with blooms.

Told my DH we're gonna have to put some black plastic pots over the tomatoes & peppers w/a 2x6 on top. not sure what to do about the others except maybe drape a sheet over them ??? Whadaya think?

The other stuff... sigh.. just gonna have to pray!!

You guys ever hear that if u get a frost after fruit tree blooms, you can hose it down the next morning and they'll be ok? We actually tried this once with our pear trees & had a bumper crop!!

Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

Our temps today didn't go higher than 55... and the prediction on NOAA for tonight worsened - from 35 to 30. Upper 30's for Saturday night. I just took out my potted plants, and I will have to bring them back by tonight. I also caught a cold, and today was my first fever-free day (so far). Bummers.

Wishing you all lots of warmth for the weekend!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

wu still saying 40F here both nights and windy. It never freezes here if its windy. its 79F out there now and the sun is just a shinin'...after doing this sort of thing for 18 years--I don't over react anymore..I might bring in the 6 (out of 16) pepper plants I still haven't got planted yet--but probably not, they are wedged between 2 bags of leaves to keep the wind off of them anyway. Pole beans are 5' high on the fishing line trellis--glad I tagged my new trellis just in time before the last rain shower hit (we've had 3 rain showers today with sun in between each one) because its definitely too windy to spray paint now.
;)

Still golf ball sized after I got home from work, not sure how long it'd been on the ground - and it was 73 degrees when I took this one:

Hail, no!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

We just finished bringing in all the plants again, the garage is 3/4 full, I am so tired of it, I hope this is the last time.
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Lots of my plants are in bloom ... hibiscus, geranium, begonia, bougainvillea, hibiscus, some angel trumpets, mandevillea, blackeyed Susan vine, azalea, salvia, pentas, nasturtuim, oxalis, false freesia, lantana, petunia, kalanchoe, begonia, amaryllis (bloom stalks), impatiens, snapdragon, bluebonnet, larkspur, butterfy weed, cyclamen, lemon, lime, roses, fragrant olive, honeysuckle, Mexican flame vine, lions tail (bloom buds), 'ruby crystal' fountain grass, pyramid plant, pansies, viola, calliandra 'Sierra Star', sky flower, sulfur cosmos, fire cracker plant, several types of cuphea, baby sunrose 'Red Apple', Mexican petunia, tomatoes, peppers and so on... I could cry about now; however, that won't help my plants any. At least the cool weather plants will be okay. Lots of my native plants' leaves are budding out and a freeze will really zap them. My plants from cuttings are still in the greenhouse at least. After protecting my plants all winter, I am upset that I am just physically unable to do so again. God bless my plants as well as yours and may He keep them safe.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I am so sorry Hazel, I hope it didn't get too low, it is 37 here this morning, so I suppose the plants I left outside will be o.k. but this weather is the pits.
The Native Plant Society is having a sale today, and all the plants were left outside, we hope they are o.k. and we hope people show up to buy.
Josephine.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It's 36º and windy here. I called my DH yesterday around 3pm from work and asked him to lug the plants back in. He got all the little ones waiting to be transplanted and he put most of the potted ones back up against the house where they spent the winter. The good news is that this cold spell won't stick around too long!!

I was going to go to the plant sale today, but we have inventory this weekend, so no plant shopping for me. :( I will get plenty of plants next weekend, plus I have all these winter sown darlings to plant.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Moving the tender plants back into my plant shelter this a.m. to find a hummingbird in the plant shelter. He seemed like he couldn't find the door to get back out. I considered leaving him in but will seal it for the day to store heat for tonight. I herded him to the door and hope he makes the cold night ahead all right.
Stay warm all... we saw 38 this a.m. and tonight is projected to be colder.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

42F here and no wind--sunny and beautiful this morning; first day without morning fog in a while

Kendalia, TX

I guess tonight is the dangerous night for the Kendalia area. It made it down to about 38 last night, but the prediction for tonight is 33.
Podster, I think it was best you herded out that hummer. I once had a real challenge getting one out of my garage, yet the door was wide open. All I could think was: bird brain.

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

34 here this morning, and 32 predicted for tonight.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

39.6ºF this morning and 36 for tonight.

Trenton(close to), TX(Zone 8a)

Can anyone say SNOW. Light dusting here and a windy 30.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Still reading 39 here at 9:53! Wow! DG home now from Michigan run. Just showed him the pics I took yesterday. He was blown away when he drove down our road.

We did sustain a little damage--top on the Jeep has been shredded, as well as the boat cover--SHREDDED! wow...
Now we have to figure out what we're gonna do about that...

sigh...

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

It got down to 39° here last night. Plants can handle that. Hoping tonight won't get as low as the predicted 32°. I definately will have the gh heater on tonight. Yesterday I broke down and started moving plants back to the gh and workshop, in a fine heavy mist. All I have to do is sheet the rest that I want to protect. All my clematis are full of buds. Confederate rose is blooming. I repotted my calibrachoas and ferns and there is no way I can move them now. They are too heavy. So I'll throw a sheet over each and pray for the best. And I do pray.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

31° predicted for tonight here. Que sera sera. Took care of some pots yesterday evening when I got home after taking DH to the hospital. He hurt his toe, but it's okay, mainly bandages and antibiotics needed.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

My poor plants are so windblown, though! This wind is horrible!
