Buds on cuttings

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Got these cuttings last fall. I don't want to move the cuttings to look at the name because buds might fall off.

Here is another one. I think the both cuttings are small flowering epies.

Great going!
You can move them a little bit. I moved mine from one part of the epi house to another so I could keep an eye on them and they where fine. That was over a week ago and the buds are still on them

So far so good.

Sandy, Beautiful!! mine didn't flower this year for some reason.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I was just lucky. I lost the buds on the cuttings. I think every thing else is to busy putting on new growth. This is the first year that I have had the Shade house and they are getting better lighting now.

My Easter cactus has buds! I am kind of surprised because I just bought it in october. I can't wait to see it bloom.
A lot of my cuttings are putting out new growth, but I think I have lost 3 cuttings over the winter. not too bad considering they were a little neglected at times.

Sunshinesw and Sandy, your pictures make me drool.

Just wait till next year when most of my plants should start to bloom. I believe most are to young this year. Besides the set up last summer did not give them enough light so that may delay the flowering of the older ones. But I would rather they get a lot of new growth this year anyway. I plan on starting to repot most of them as soon as I am sure the weather will stay warm. It's back down into the 40's, odd weather for this time of year.

Oh I have more cuttings on the way, from 2 sources. LOL

The buds on first photo blasted but the other one might open up in the morning.

Sunshine: Love that one called Fern Laborde! Really pretty bloom!

Wren: That Easter cactus bloom is Gorgeous!

I keep watching my Epi's in hopes of spotting buds ... so far, nothing!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I am beginning to think the cool weather is slowing them down. It was back down into the 40's the other day. At least that is my hope and there will be blooms later. Still planing a trip down to Bob Smoley's but the garden is taking all my money right now.

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Lin, thanks! someone said fern laborde will not flower in hot climate so I was surprised. What kind of epies do you have?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Lin yes do you have anything new? Missed hearing from you on here.

Nothing much here in the way of Epi's. I will post links to my older pic's in PF as I can't access photo's on my computer for some reason, and my computer person (DH) isn't here to troubleshoot for me.

This is an older photo of my E. hookeri: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/168905/ that was given to me as a little plant back @1976. It sits in a big pot out under a tree in the backyard. Last year is the very first time I've seen a bloom! I don't know much about Epi's and had no idea about night/day bloomers until learning from this site! I had never paid much attention to it. When I saw buds last summer I made a point to keep checking and going out with camera and flashlight in hand to hopefully get a picture of the blooms, which finally happened: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/216214/ I've heard E. hookeri is fragrant but I never detected any scent on mine at all. I throw a blanket over this plant when we have cold nights during the winter.

I have a large E. oxypetalum that hasn't bloomed yet, or maybe I've missed those blooms too! I will have to take a photo of that one to post later.

And I have a large Selenicereus (Ric Rac/Fishbone Cactus): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/176047/ and a couple of small pots from cuttings. I had no idea this thing bloomed until seeing buds awhile back. I waited patiently and went out one morning and they were all shriveled and ugly looking. I thought they had been attacked by bugs or something and posted photo's to ask if anyone knew what was eating them, LOL ... another night bloomer that I had missed! I've learned so much from folks here on DG!

And, I have a small table with some noids rec'd as cuttings in trades a couple of years ago. The labels attached to the pots have long faded completely and the little plastic labels that you stick into the soil have been picked out by squirrels, which got into my few orchids last year too, Grrrr ... I love those furry little critters but they do irk me at times! I had about 2 dozen orchids hanging in a tree last year. My orchids had never been bothered before and all of a sudden I was finding bark, moss, labels and a couple of orchid plants scattered on the ground under the tree. A couple of plants were actually missing from their baskets totally ... never found any sign of them! I figured some squirrels nest must be decorated very prettily with my orchids ... or else they had a fancy dinner at my expense!

Wren: I got a couple of cuttings from you but don't remember right off hand which they were. As stated above, I have trouble keeping labels on my plants! I remember one I received as a cutting a year or so ago from another DG'er called Heaven Scent or something like that, but wouldn't have a clue as to which one it is out on my deck as I've had no buds or blooms yet to be able to re-label it.

I have a lot of different kinds of regular ole' house plants but some of y'all have tremendous collections! Wren, how many Epi's do you have now? I remember last year it was in the hundreds!

I look forward to seeing more of everyone's beautiful Epi blooms!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

WEEELLL! I have not counted resently but Think maybe 20 more has been added to the collection. As soon as it warms up a bit more I am going to start repotting and relabeling everything. I have added to my CC collection (thinking about a shade house just for them-the oak tree in front is dieing and their summer spot is getting to much sun.) they are around 30. Plus I am planning a trip down to Bob Smoley's just as soon as my flower garden gets caught up. Going to get more Easter cactus and CC's and maybe a few more Epis, plus hope I have enough money to get more Epis when Got Epis has his Mother's day sale.

Most of my Epis are just putting on growth.

Woo Hoo, can access my pictures again, thanks to my husband fixing whatever glitch was in my laptop!

This is my Epiphyllum Oxypetalum. I've had it for a long time but it's never bloomed ... or rather, I've never seen blooms. It's living on the pool deck now so maybe I will get to experience the pretty flowers before long.

(Zone 1)

Any ideas what's causing this? This is the oxypetalum but I've had this happen on a couple of Epi's and I cut the affected leaf off. It kinda starts out as dried out in the center of the leaf and works it's way out from the mid vein.

Thumbnail by plantladylin
(Zone 1)

I found this leaf on the same oxypetalum. Is something chewing it? Is it safe to use a product like BATS on Epi's?

Thumbnail by plantladylin
Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

It looks like slug, they have slug stuff at the HD or Lowes. I think BATS are safe to use on epies. Some tines caterpillars feed on epies too.

Jan

(Zone 1)

Thanks Jan! I will treat it with BATS, hopefully that will kill anything, including slugs! Odd though, I haven't seen any slugs around. But, a couple of weeks ago I found two skinny little catepillar type things crawling on the pool deck, I wonder if that could be the culprit!

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

Mine looks the exact same way, and started looking that way the next day after it was out in a frost. I assumed the frost was what did it, but, I could be wrong. I was going to just cut off all the bad stuff, and reroot the parts around it that looked good.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Could also be to much sun. I have one epi in the shade house that looks like it get to much sun.

Also there are snails that may be doing that, they hid in dead leaves, under the plant leaves and around the pot.

I have LOTS of new growth. May have to wait till next year for flowers. Oh well.

Sandy

(Zone 1)

hmm ... My plant is on the pool deck that is completely screened but the afternoon sun can get pretty intense. I am still inclined to think the damage is from an insect of some sort. I said there were little caterpillar type things crawling around a few weeks ago but they were more like centipedes. I think I will go google different bug photo's and see if I see something that looks similar! I'm going to treat with Bayer Advanced next week!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

what I am talking about is the brown rotted away section, probable a mix of sun and water on the "leaves". the round dents where probable done by snails-which I am having problems with-or slugs.

(Zone 1)

Oh, ok ... Thanks Wren! I am going to move the plant to the other side of the pool enclosure where it will only get morning sun!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I think that would be better.

New York, NY(Zone 6b)

Plantladylin, you have nice plants and a pretty kitty.

(Zone 1)

Thank You! That's our Miss "Cali", the sweetest kitty who's ever owned us! She is almost 15 and has kidney failure so we aren't sure how much longer she will be with us. We are enjoying her company and loving her for as long as we can.

Very pretty but I can't find ID.

Nice flower. What size is it? It looks to me middle size.

Sandy the epi nut (My epi count is up to 224 that is counting the seedlings.)

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Sandy, thanks! it's medium size. 224 epies? oh my goodness!!!

Yes I just get another 7 delivered. Still looking!!!!! At least I am not a cat hoarder. LOL

I will try to see if I can find a match for it.
