Construction of a pit for pond equipment

Akron, PA(Zone 6b)

I have seen references to digging a pit for the filter and/or pump. I am looking for a good way to hide the essentials to having good water clarity, but want the natural look of not seeing any of the workings.

If I dig out an area for the filter from a bottom drain (or the like) can this be housed in a pit?

If so, when I would want to drain out the bottom of the filter, if I dig a channel that at the end will be lower than the outlet at its end point, has any one done something like this?

How deep do you dig? Any recommendations to size?

Is this only for the pump?

How do you run out your electric cord to the outlet? Any good photos of what this would look like?

Last, any creative ways to hide the opening? I thought of decking that could be slid over it and away; or a shallow box that I could plant some grass or other plants that would fit over it, but not too heavy to move it.
Thanks for any and all ideas.

I've saw many designs and ways to cover a pit. Pond dock, deck, bridge, etc..
Can be used to hide your pump, filters, etc.

Here's a pix of our filter/pump pit right. Our bottom drains go into 1st chamber, then water spills over into 2&3 then the last is the pump then returns to back to the pond.

From a distance showing most of the main pond area, of course it has alot more flowers, etc now!

Good luck,

Thank you for replying to this question of mine, too, Bonnie.

You have done so much to make your pond look as natural as possible...Is the chamber for the filters premade, or is made for any other purpose? Or did you have it custom made?

My DH made ours LuAnne but you can use 55 gallon drums.

Here is a pix of a ponding friends' which gives you an example of a dock.

Bonnie:
May I ask how he made his chamber for the filter? What is it made out of? Also, how do you drain the filters when you need to clean them out since they are underground?

That is a good idea with a dock...would I assume that is her filter buried underneath?
