To be or not to be...H lacunosa

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hello everyone!! I'm always raving about the scent of Lacunosa - I absolutely adore her scent. So imagine my jubilation when I saw one perfectly healthy one mark down at HD!!! I thought at the time that the leaves "looked" a bit bigger but bought it any way. I'm hoping ya'll can help me with this. The first pic is of my Lacunosa - bless her heart she's still in a 4" pot but has been blooming for me (last 3 years) despite her little size.

Here is a penny on one of her leaves for scent comparison

Now here's the "Lacunosa" from HD

And here's one of its leaves with a penny for comparison....
Soooo any thoughts on ID from the Hoya Gurus? Please and thank you.

Your plant from HD definitely looks like H. lacunosa and both of them look to be ssp. pallidaflora. Within the same ssp. of the same species it is usual/common to have differently sized leaves...based on environment and nutrition. Looks like you got a lovely plant!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh Carol...YOU'VE just made my night!!! Shows my ignorance, I didn't even know there were ssp! Do all of the ssp of lacunosa have the same gorgeous scent?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

YES!!!!

And there are small leaves, long skinny leaves, heart shaped leaves.... and they all have the same flower (some larger som smaller) and the same fragrance!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh my...."Houston, we have a problem" LOL I can't pass up fragrance...now I'll be ISO more lacunosa ssp - they're such easy plants how can I pass that up?!?

So exactly how does one care for lacunosa? I bought my first one a couple of weeks ago. It's an EA plant so I have to be very careful with it.

S

Bright light - very little direct sun - if any, early morning or late afternoon. Let nearly dry between waterings. Mine was a sickly single little cutting from someone who kept her plant too cold in winter and always too wet. In a year and a half later, its a nice bushy continuously flowering beauty.

Christine

Thanks Christine. As you know, EA plants stay wet for quite a while and from Carol's advice somewhere on the forum, that she waters from the bottom. So I've been picking the plant up to see if it is getting lighter b4 I dare water.

Also, do you know if the lacunosa with the bronze leaves a different variety?

S

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

The bronze being a new leaf?

The whole plant was a mass of bronzy leaves.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Interesting. Within the same species or subspecies there are many clones...probably one of them... Would love to see it!

My little lacunosa seems to enjoy more light then the other types of hoyas I have. She's put on a bit of growth since I moved her locale from a north facing window (not on the sill but back) to a south facing window.

I didn't buy it because I wasn't sure I was going to like lacunosas. The Home Depot had 8 inch baskets for $10.

That's how much mine was at HD - and I'm thinking it's probably an 8" as well.
Carol - silly question but where would I find a variety of the lacunosa ssp?

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

I find that even more than bright light my lacunosa only really takes off when given extra humidity. Mine never grew in the winter with the dry central heating until I was able to increase the RH.

H. lacunosa comes from the Philippines....and most of those hoyas prefer bright indirect light and humidity. Chantell, there are few places that carry different clones of H. lacunosa... I know that SRQ Hoyas has as many as I do and she is online. I understand she will soon be on Plant Scout as well. I don't know about other hoya sellers like Mel and Awanda...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Carol - just noticed the vendor in FL describes the following hoyas as having a good scent: Hoya aff. Albiflora, Hoya archboldiana, &
Hoya coriacea. I realize scent is subjective but would you say their scents are as nice (and as strong) as H. lacunosa's? Are there any others you recommend based on fragrance? BWT thank you so much for your patience with my million questions!!! ^_^

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Yes....those hoyas have good fragrance...archboldiana is wonderful but noticeable only at night, The others are large leafed and large plants.... Some smaller ones I like are H. sipitanguensis (like newly mown hay), H. hellwigiana (like melons), H. heuschkeliana (like butter), H. obscura (sweet), H. cv. Iris Marie (like, uh, lilacs), H. odorata (like good soap)... These opinions are mine, of course...very subjective.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Many of my plants are night fragrant (must be a trend...LOL)...I really only notice lacunosa's scent at night. Not sure that I have room for a bunch of larger leafed ones though (matter a fact giving a bigger one I have to one of my DG friends who has the room for it ^_^) The lacunosa reminds me of an expensive French perfume - a sultry smell to it (me who LOVES my gardenias, jasmines, lavenders). I'm thinking that H. cv. Iris Marie sounds like a "yummy" one. Do the H. obscura & archboldiana have scents in the same fragrant category as the lacunosa?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

H. archboldiana, to me, is spicier...it is light...nice!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ohhh spicy is GOOD

I got a new lacunosa from HD too. It's an EA plant. The label has it as Hoya 'Snow Caps' (lacunosa albo). The leaves are longer than my 'regular' lacunosa. This was has origin as Thailand. I thought it interesting enough to buy it. Here's a picture of the leaves. Two on left are 'snow caps', and leaves on right are speckled lacunosa and regular lacunosa.

How smart are you do to a comparison. My original looks like #3...the one I just got...hmmmm...not sure probably those first 2

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Chantell...the second from the right is H. lacunosa ssp. lacunosa and the far right is lacunosa ssp. pallidaflora. The difference in the size of leaves really means nothing...nothing at all. Size and color of leaves is determined by the individual clone and by nutrition and environment. 'SnoCaps' is a sport off of ssp. pallidaflora that happened to show up with lots of those speckles....that can happen with any plant! My big plant of 'Sno Caps' has some plain green leaves mixed in on vines too....

Nice comparison.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Carol - I'd read else where that "Turns out that this is an entirely new clone of hoya lacunosa recently released by Exotic Angel." Had you heard anything about that???

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Which one...the SnoCaps or the reddish leafed one.

Who published that it is an entirely new clone? Do you remember? It is a new clone of H. lacunosa ssp. pallidaflora....but that doesn't mean it is a new ssp. nor a new var....and it does not seem tobe stable.

Sometimes putting a cutting thru x-ray can mutate the genes enough to produce a wierd thing... After all, remember that EA is more interested in $$$ than correct labels. HAHA. There is nothing wrong with collecting them, at all....I love mine....but it is a nightmare to try to make it a different subspecies or a different plant. A 'clone' is like a brother or a sister...same species, same parents...different colored hair.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hmmm not sure...the pic I saw actually looked like the one I'd just bought...course that's not saying much with my untrained eyes though - truth be known...LOL
Great explanation, Carol...see I can understand it much when folks use metaphors - that's MY way of explaining and learning!! Thank you.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Just shot this...sorry it is kinda blurry.. This is H. lacunosa 'Langkawi Island'...a different clone of H. lacunosa ssp. lacunosa with very small narrow leaves....but look at that one leaf...almost 3 times longer....same vine, just the node above.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Gosh...I HATE it when I do that!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL I do it all the time AND send work emails minus the excel sheet that should be attached...sad isn't it. Ok...I can see what you mean...that's crazy.

(Zone 1)

LOL, sorta sounds like my family, six kids all from the same parents but some of us have thick hair, some very thin, some of us have hair that grows long, some complain their hair won't grow at all! Oh, and some tend to be leaner than others too!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I have a lean sister. I hate her!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

My sis ended up with the blue eyes and curls...what's up with that?

(Zone 1)

LOL, out of four girls in my family I was always the real skinny one ... 5' 5 1/2" and 102 lbs the day I got married, too skinny! I stayed around 110-115 for many years and didn't begin putting on the weight until about age 45, and eventually learned to just live with it. I may be chubby but I'm happy and don't worry about weight anymore. I am what I am, LOL.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I still hate her.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I found a half-sister after being an only child for 65 years. When we met, you could tell we were from the same father. We afre both 'fat'. I wish I could have taken after my Mom. She was 'skinny'. ^_^

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I prefer to think of it as being a smidge too short for my width.
