Hello in your 2nd picture you have a wire type fence do you use it as a hot bed for plants
with plastic over the top? Thank You

I have a question about your first picture......how are you retaining the soil in all those rings (except the rings from the very top and very bottom of the barrel)? I have a barrel that is just sitting around looking kinda ugly.

Napa, CA(Zone 9b)

Fabulous idea to go upwards. Interested in learning more...

Oakwood (Butler,TX), TX(Zone 8b)

MarciaS,
In the fall/winter We will cover part of the panels for a green house .

MaryMcP,
All the tops & Bottoms are cut out .. The way they sit they are on top of the ring below very little area for the soil to come out .. this is the first year so we will see if it holds up.

MomsterGina,
Thanks .. Its not that I dont have room for an on the ground garden .. But we raise Aussies and have lots of Moles That im tring to keep out of the garden.
Things are starting to grow I need to get a few ew pictures posted...

Wow, that is a great setup. It looks like your gonna have way too many strawberries though!

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

There is no way to have too many strawberries, yum yum.

Oakwood (Butler,TX), TX(Zone 8b)

Ratfood,
I only have 25 plants to start out with ..And a lot of strawberry lovers that have to wait till next year for home grown strawberries ....
My Friend that gave me the plants got about 30 gals last year and is already getting about a gal a day this year .. they ran out of strawberries over the winter ...

texasrockgarden,
Ill try and get a few new ones after I mow tomorrow ..All this rain can't keep the grass down.. But I have tomatoes, bell peppers, beans & squash babies everything is finding its way to the trellis & starting to climb

Oakwood (Butler,TX), TX(Zone 8b)

Ok it took me till just before sunset to get around to pictures ...
I started to more and the mower went putput cough cough and died ...lol
DH had to come to my rescue. Anyway I didn't get to weed wack ... so don't look at my weeds please.

What did you use for the arbor and how tall is it? Evrything seems to be growing well! Neat ideas!

Oakwood (Butler,TX), TX(Zone 8b)

6 cattle panels set 4 feet apart tonight I took some field fence and tied it in over the cukes above the fence and to the panels on each side for them to runup and over. Its about 8' at the top of the loop because we started at the top of the fence on one side and then to the ground about 10' away..

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

Very effective! 8' high! The sun is so hot here, this could well be a perfect solution for intermittent shade in the walkways! Even walking 15' in the the glaring hot summer sun is getting to be a challenge! I'm sure its the same in your Tx zone denimangle!

Oakwood (Butler,TX), TX(Zone 8b)

bedouin,
you learn to get things done in the morning hours then go back out around 4:00
its already hitting 90 here.

Great looking veggies. I like the overhead. I am contemplating something along those lines to support a 70/30 aluminum shade cover over my tomatoes.

I am in my second week with temps in the upper 90's. It hit 100º one day. Yesterday the wind was real bad.

I am watering something around the clock. The nice thing about watering veggies with drip irrigation and soakers is that most of the weeds outside the drip zone are already dying from the heat.

Nice setup you have. It'll be easy to convert to a greenhouse this winter.

What did you use to cut those barrels into 4 pieces? We have one stray barrel that I'm casting a covetous eye upon and my neighbor has extra strawberry plants.......

The winter green house is what part of it will be ... DH has already said he would do that for me with a door in one end.

woofie,
Again it was DH ... I believe he used his Sawzall (sp)
I am starting to get flowers on the strawberrys It kills me to have to pinch them off the first year :(

Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

Aha! The sawzall strikes again! We may need to get a different blade, but, yeah, that would work. Thanks!

Oakwood (Butler,TX), TX(Zone 8b)

Lunch from the garden,
I just had to have a taste along with a hand full of cherry tomatoes.
Yummy

Denim, what kind of soil mix are you using in the barrels? Everything is beautiful and no bugs, how do you accomplish that?

Oakwood (Butler,TX), TX(Zone 8b)

I have Goats .... I put Bag mulch in the bottom(got it cheap) then mixed dirt (the hay & goat poop had turned to dirt) from mucking out my goat pens with bag soil (again cheap stuff)
As far as bugs go I have found a few on my squash plants but I feed them to my Chickens :)
I have tomato plants that are over 6" tall with tomatoes at the top ...
