I purchased 3 Garden Patch grow boxes over the winter and have a few questions. The answers are probably here somewhere and I'll keep looking through the old posts, but thought maybe someone could help me off the top of their head.
1. I see that the recommended # of radishes in the box is 10-the same as for sunflowers . . .that seems a little low. Does anyone do it any differently? I know in Square Foot Gardening, Mel Bartholomew says 16 radishes per foot-my boxes are 14"x30" so it seems to me that you should be able to grow more than 10 radishes at a time.
2. Has anyone grown canna lilies in their grow boxes?
I'm really hoping that I'm successful with these boxes-I have very limited sun in my yard and I think that these would be the way to optimize what I have. I'm planning on growing some cherry tomatos and peppers on my deck. I do have a small garden area-a raised bed that is 4x12 and would like to use these boxes in addition to that so that I can have some crop rotation-I grow the same things in my bed every year and know I'm just asking for problems.
Thanks!
Deb
A couple of "earth box" questions . . .
Morning, Deb. Wish I could help you but I've never grown in a Garden Patch so I'm not familiar w/any restrictions they might have. But, yes, 10 radishes is a slim amount of crop for your 14" X 30" area. I think I'd recommend you grow radishes amongst other crops in your other (raised) beds you mentioned. They are easily interspersed with lettuces, onions, beets, carrots, greens, etc.
As for rotating crops, that is usually not a big problem with container growing and unless you see a huge amount of disease in your raised beds I wouldn't worry too much about it there either. Keeping the growing medium "well fed" should be your highest concern.
Can't help you with your cannas...I just grow them in the ground here.
Happy gardening!
