Need help for Sinningia babies

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

These little Country Snowflake babies are from seeds sowed Oct. 28th. Are they too small to pot up into 3 oz. solo cups? Would it be better to put them into 1 oz. condiment cups? I don't know if they are mini sinns. or regular size. I know they like humidity, so eventually I'll put one into a brandy snifter or a small glass terrarium bowl

Just me personal preference, but I think a one ounce is too little for 99% of all plants with a root system. Those look nice and healthy and I would plant them into solo cups with a dome. You can plant sinningias pretty deep (take the two bottom leaves off).

Someone else have a better idea or another idea? Please say so.

I would put them into the 1 oz-- sinningias like to be transplanted-- they grow faster--you'll have to repot them before too long if they aren't minis. I use a lot of the 1 oz cups for the first transplanting--depending on the size of the seedling tho-- some go right into 3oz--but I tend to over water so smaller works for me

Tommie knows more than I do.....I don't even own any 1 ounce cups for anything.....^_^

I just posted this on the March VI thread:

"I just put one of the bigger seedlings of Sinn. Country Snowflake in a brandy snifter to try it out. We'll see how it does. I have about 8 more seedlings. I'll put two or three in the 1oz cups and the a few in the 3oz solo's. I'll see which one's grow the best."

My problem is that I'm impatient to see them grow big and bloom. The 1oz cups I have are from cough medicine. I saved them just in case, one day, they would come in handy. Today two or three of them will be put to use.

Remember when I grew 18 kinds of sinningias alone from seed? They were the big ones but I also grew a lot of the smaller ones from seed, too.......let me see if I can find pics............

Here are sinningia peresiana in their individual solo cups.

I think I planted these sinningias in two inch pots before I separated them. (the seed I planted)

Very interesting--I'd like to hear about the progress of all these seedlings--how you all proceeded, and the outcomes---maybe devote a thread just to report on progress on seedlings? I don't have any--just an idea I thought I would throw out there.

The big ones you see in the post before you, Jan, took 8 to 9 months from seed to bloom. The smaller ones I can't even remember how much time from seedlings to bloom. I took every single plant in that picture and potted up in solo cups. There they stayed until they went into 2" pots.........and finally into 3 and 4" pots by the time they bloomed. I was also growing them under 4 lights to a shelf.

Once you have some that you like........then take cuttings from then on and don't start from seed. Here are some small ones I just took cuttings of and shared with everyone. The cuttings root in a short time.

Anything I do in life is in excess........and then, it is time to move on to another obsession of a particular kind of plant. I am so happy for you that Smelly Cat has 2 buds......won't be long now!!

Let me reminisce with some of the larger sinningias in bloom at one time this spring before they went away...........

LOL! Gail! Are you sure you are done growing sinns? I gave away Smelly Cat last fall in the chaos of 08. Big mistake--really miss it. This is a webcam pic-no camera back then. BTW...mine didn't smell, but I still like to sing Smelly Cat.

Gail,What a trip down memory lane! The original reason I started growing AVs and other Gessies back in the late 70's is because the first time I saw a Gloxinnia,I fell head over heels!
Smelly Cat is very pretty.Nothing like the name...LOL.The one they call ugly girl is also very attractive.

phoebesviolets, I love that song, "its not your fault"......, just cracks me up!! If you tell me how or how much to cut off of the leaf I will gladly send it to you. I would "try" to start it, but you would most likely do a lot better than me!!LOLOL

Gail, I just hope mine looks 1/2 as good as all of yours!! As always ladies, its my usual WOWSERS!!!!!

I love to see the babies you guys grow into those beautiful flowers, it just amazes me!!

We can all learn in a hurry. I bought my first african violet 2 years and 2 months ago. I had never even heard the word gesneriad......................

Thanks Laura! Sounds like you have a young plant--I'll get back to you after it has had time to become more established. I have only 6 streps--but I might have something you want in trade--4 are babies at the moment.
Gail--that's amazing---what did you do before gessies?

Hi All;
i grow lots of sinns, they are my favorite,if they are a mini sinn, you can transplant them in a 2 oz. solo cup.i use that size quite often & it's true the more you transplant them the faster they grow.

Imadigger, please continue to show pictures of the growth of your baby plants. Would love to see how they do!!!

I just get in such a hurry, once I get outside, hopefully I will stop staring at these so much!! LOL
