Morning Surprises! What did you find this monring?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I love waking up to new blooms. This poppy opened overnight. The bloom is larger than my fist. This plant is above waist high and has tons of buds getting ready to open! Can't wait.

Amorphophalus konjac....have waited 3 yrs for it to bloom. We moved it to the courtyard out front for the neighbors to get to "sniff" it. Both DH and I have bronchitis and can't smell anything.....but neighbors' reactions are pretty funny. It smells like road kill.....

Beautiful poppy bloom! Still waiting here although I am seeing buds! Hooray...

LOL on the road kill Bubbles! Glad you aren't able to savor the fragrance but sooo sad you are both puny! Did your DH end up with pnemonia? Did you get him to an emergency room?

Blooming this a.m. are all the purples... trailing verbena, spiderworts, phlox... but in a neglected and shady corner of the yard, a vintage purple iris.

I love the fragrance of these...

Podster....he had acute sinusitis and acute bronchitis. There's a medical group out near us that I thought was a urgent care clinic, but turns out to be state of the art walk-in type, 7 days a week. Took x-rays and gave him a cd with the x-rays on it to take to his doctor. We were impressed. Thanks for asking.

Poppies are the tallest I've seen. Really pretty. And the iris is such a vibrant color, bet all the purple color in your yard are gorgeous.

Here's a poor little orchid, Siam Jade..Lakeview...or so says the tag. bought it at Lowe's last year as part of one of those huge carts. I'm not an orchid growing, but orchid killer. Somehow it escaped my winter drowning. Has two more buds.

Man, Bubbles, I'm impressed with your orchid. I can grow them like crazy, they just never bloom. I finally dumped my last one in the garbage a few months ago. It still looked good and had shiny leaves, I fed it orchid food, potted it in it's special little orchid mix, sat it in a sunny window, but out of direct sun and it lived there for 5 years without a bloom other than the ones on it when I bought it. I got tired of pampering the darn thing and trashed it.

Austin, I love that poppy. I may have to try some of those this fall. From all the trouble I've seen on getting them to bloom from other's postings, I probably don't have the patience for them though.

I feel your pain, Crow. I planned to take them in house (have about 5) during winter. Just didn't get around to it. I found another one starting to bloom out there. The pots they're in are 4" and they're crawling out. I'm not sure I want to start another plant obcession. Holding off buying all the orchid mix and food. All I can think of is... I hit everything in the greenhouse with Messenger a few weeks ago. They might think they're dying and throwing a bloom as their last hurrah!

These Asiatic lilies are about to open......

Thumbnail by bigbubbles

Bubble, what lily is that?

Austin, is that poppy coral colored?

Wells, TX(Zone 8b)

I found color on my lady banks rose so it will open soon, Buds on my green china rose and buds on my clematis. My scabosia is in bloom along with my white iris, coral bells and ice plant. A lowes close out (Batik Iris) that I had given up on is finally putting out new growth along with a hydranga that my sister gave to when it was in the last throwes of dying.. I found new growth on it as I was getting readt to toss it... and to top it off I saw hummers and blue birds in my yard today! life is good!

Crowellli, I think poppies are easy, but I bought 3 plants in February one year and put those out. After the seed heads dry out and you can hear the seeds rattling around, just open them and shake! Come February you'll have to thin them out, but they've been pretty effortless for me. I forgot to shake the heads last summer, so I only have a few plants that came up this year.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll have to look it up later for you. I know it as Lowesini pinceitis. More commonly known as my Lowe's pink!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL ~ my kind of horticultural name!

Please!!! Don't tell me growing poppies are hard till mine bloom. They have buds so maybe...

That is a pretty orchid bloom. I resist that temptation only because I have too many other green obsessions that live in pots.

I have a few Lowe's pink .lol
I love that tho, it almost looks oriental and seem to love the south :0)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow! Even more beauty. So tired after working outside for several days, but, hey! It's the best of life. After waiting 5-6 years before back surgery I can't wait to get up every morning and get started. All of you inspire me over and over.

Man, I keep forgetting which forum I am in - sorry to butt in!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Wait a minute KayJones... what's wrong with sharing your blooms here? Texans can appreciate looking at them too!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Kay, you don't have to be a Texan to post on here. Florida and Texas have such similar climates that if it works for you, it'll probably work for us. We love seeing your blooms, so post away and don't worry about it!

My coral honeysuckle is blooming too.

I have another bloom this morning! I'm not sure what kind of poppies these are. My guess is Peony type but if anyone else can get a closer id, let me know. They are coral in color. Look at the size of this clump. There are only three plants in there. I have found poppies to be very easy to grow. I haven't been able to start them in seed starters, just scattering the seeds on the ground is the easiest way. I collect the seeds from the largest plants year to year and then scatter the seeds in the fall.

Ok, one more pic. ;-)

I love that honeysuckle, Kay. We have the same kind that pops up in the most unusual places. It's most welcome because the hummers seem to love it :0)

Well I just love that coral color!!! I planted mostly pink and lavender, but next year coral for sure!

This mornings' first bloom... Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow... Brunfelsia ~ loaded with pollen.

I noticed that my poppies bloomed this morning. I didn't have time to get a pic (I was running late, of course), so I hope they aren't too done in by the high winds today so I can get a pic of them tonight. I'm so excited!!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

When they open, how long do the blooms last? Looking forward to more poppy photos...

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Pod, I have no idea since this is the first year I've had them.

I've only grown the single petal type, not the pompom. They bloom for about a month, the individual blooms only lasted a few days, but they're was another right behind it.

I still don't have buds...In back of my mind, I worry that I'm nursing along milkweeds and thistles.lol

This tree fern survived our cold spells - it's starting to unfurl it's fronds.

Pic in next post!

I didn't realize the petals were so delicate! Here's one partially with petals and one totally windblown.

They are really pretty!

Only thing I have blooming is ajuga and some grape hyacinths I didn't know I still had.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Purple blooms I love! Very pretty Brunfelsia KayJones.

Now I am excited waiting for my poppies to bloom. I've no idea what they will be. They were some really old seeds from a friends Mom. He found the seeds in her freezer and remembered her planting them when he was young ~ about 60 years ago.

Saw my first hummer today too. He just wouldn't hold still for a photo... lol

Cocoa ~ Milkweeds maybe... thistles you would know! 8 0

Aww, your poor poppies, Stephnie!!! I agree with Kay it's still very pretty!

I think the seed pods are just as pretty as the blooms. I love the way the pods dry and shrink away at the top, leaving little holes... like little salt shakers.LOL

Pod, I probably could tell the thistles :0) I do let some grow, because i love the blooms. I actually purchased variegated thistle seeds this year and WSed them. I thought the 'variegated' part of the description sound so exotic. They're up and growing, looking variegated...more spotchy, sickly and diseased looking then exotic tho.lol
