Thought I would start an OT bloom thread! I wanted to share my loot from last weekend's orchid show!
Bollopetalum Midnight Blue- the seller told me it was fragrant, but it appears that was an untruth!
March-OT Blooms
LOVE Charmer...that's a winner!
Those are real beauties! Love the Phal Charmer, I have never tried orchids, still trying to get the hang of the gessies and av thing! But ooohhh love to look at those blooms! Laura H
WoW! Both are gorgeous! Nice haul^_^
Here's Pot. Hisako Akasuka 'Volcano Queen'. She was one of those that I bought from
HD in a bag. She blooms every year at this time. This year there is only one flower. I've been sorta neglecting the orchids. I'm paying too much attention to my new addiction of gessies. Even my hoya are slightly neglected.
Nice Eileen! I've never seen orchid bags at my HD. Never heard of them till I came to Dave's. Isn't it hard to keep up sometimes!
I bought my first two cattleya today at Lowes Home Builders. They were also in a bag for
$5.98. I really hope that they do well. I got Haddie Notch 'Paradise', and Burana Beauty
'Burana.' They look really good, so maybe I'll have some luck with these.
Ima, how long did it take your "orchid-in-a-bag" to bloom after you first got it?
That Volcano Queen is gorgeous. The color and form is outstanding.
I bought two of those little catts in a bag but I didn't know they came with a name..........must go outside and look!
Yours is wonderful!
OK, ladies. Mine do have names. One is Sanyung RUP and one says Greenwich 'Elmhurst'. Mine are still in those little 2" pots. How long do I leave them in those baby pots? They are happy and putting on new growth so I am afraid to touch them.^_^
Repotting: Cattleyas should only need to be repotted every 2 to 3 years when the leading bulb is over the rim of the pot and the roots are crawling over the sides of the pot. The best time to pot is when you can see new growths are developing but before the new roots have grown;

Thanks so much!!!
It's blurry cuz they're flyin!^_^ Beautiful!
No wonder I had trouble with them ^_^
Gorgeous-- they do look like little birds-- or is it moths?
Digger! OMG! This cymbidi has been on my wish list for a loooooooooooooong time. So far, I've found only 1 vendor- Santa Barbara Orchid Estates. Do you know of any others?
Also, if I remember correctly, this one smells just heavenly!????
Also, Digger- does your Potinara have a fragrance? It's so beautiful!
Volcano Queen smells heavenly. All my orchids are outside under the Lychee tree. When they bloom I bring them inside so I can see and smell theml. This one reminds me of perfume. I used to sell perfume years ago, and can't remember the name of what it reminds me of. It's very light and spicy sweet.
I've had good luck with the orchids in the bags, because they are young and get used to my enviorment. It takes about 2-3 years for them to bloom. A few of mine have to be re-potted. They are close to the edge of pot. If I wait too long, they will grow over the edge. Then the pot has to be broken to get them out.
I have too many 'addictions' (orchids, hoya, gessies, cactus and sucs., etc) to keep track of all. ^_^
I just potted up a few sinningia seedlings. I took pictures and will post on a new thread.
See you later.
Here is one I was going to repot (was a gift two years ago). Evidently the lady had left it in a 4" pot for years and then just placed the 4" in a bigger clay pot.
I posted on the orchid forum but thought you all might know what to do with these wrapped around root system (although roots are growing out the top and everywhere)
Gail, it looks like some of those roots are dead roots. Loosten the roots with your fingers and see if they are dried up or mushy. If you can, try to remove the 4" pot. I would try to remove some of them, not all, and pot in fresh mix. You may have to pot up in a larger pot. Live roots are white. Someone else may have better suggestions on the orchid forum. You should post over there too.
I agree with you about loosening up some of these roots in a ball.............the orchid forum said just use a bigger pot and go......I don't think so. This 4" pot had already been placed in a 5" pot..........so I have the bigger pot and I cut literally ..........had to cut and use the pliers to get the plastic 4" pot off...........here I go. Thanks again......
