Raised Bed Layout

Kearney, NE(Zone 5a)

This is the first time posting to this board, how exciting! Anyway, I have an 8X4 raised bed that is 1 foot deep. I usually just plant tomatoes and peppers but want to try some different things this year and am not sure of the layout. I want to grow tomatoes(2-3), green peppers(2), vine beans on one square trellis, cucumbers, onions, carrots, melons, radishes and a few herbs. I'm not looking to grow a huge amount, just a few to experiment and to have some fresh produce during the summer.

The long sides face the north and south and the short sides face east and west. I am wondering the best placement of plants for sun needs. I was going to place the tall trellis plants in the middle but not sure what to put where around the sides. Any advice from the experts is appreciated:)

Hi evesta,

How is the weather in Kearney? My daughter lives in Plattsmouth some of the time. Her job requires her to move around a lot.
i would say the rule of thumb would be that the taller plants run along the north side from east to west and the shorter plants on the south. You don't want any of the plants to block the sun from the others at any one time.

The weather in Kearney has been beautiful! Thank you for the advice!
