tea olive in a patio container in zone 6-pittsburgh pa.

Pittsburgh, PA

Anyhone have any success growing a tea olive, osmanthus fragrans , in a container in zone 6? Pittsburgh. I want the scent --where to purchase ?

Barnesville, GA(Zone 7b)

Here is a link from the plant files:

It does not appear to be hardy in your zone. There are several vendors that list it though. If you keep it in a pot in the winter it may or not bloom for you. I'm fortunate enough to have several and they are hardy for me here in Georgia. The scent is exquisite and should be bottled.

I didn't know they would grow in 7b - I might give one a try.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Do you have the option to bring it inside for the winter? Being in a container tends to knock about a zone off the hardiness, so I think it would not have much chance at all in a pot outside all winter in your area. In the ground I don't think it'll make it either since Pittsburgh is in 6a and this is listed as hardy to 7b...if it were hardy to 7a and you were in 6b then I'd be more optimistic but 6a vs 7b is a pretty big gap.
