There's been some new studies done lately that shows C. acanthocarpa v. coloradensis's range totally overlaps with var. acanthocarpa morphologically and is therefore not being accepted as a variety. These three photos you have on this entry page do appear to be Cylindropuntia ganderi anyway's. Here's the C. ganderi page: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/66649/

Is that true with all three of my photos (all came from same botanical garden)?

Hi, I think that those second two pics are of C. acanthocarpa. As mentioned above by Xenomorph, the var coloradoensis is losing it's status as being valid. I live in Yavapai county, AZ and have several different looking C. acanthocarpa plants, many of them are var thornberi (which is extremely common here) I also have some forms that are from south of me closer to Phoenix, and a mystery one that I picked up and rescued in the middle of a local road in my town.

I believe you are correct that the last two images on the entry page are C. acanthocarpa var. acanthocarpa (Not var. major).
These 2: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/235893/

The species seems to have a variance of spine colors and length, yellow, black & white, long and short.

Palmbob, the closeup of the stem (last photo on page) is a close-up of the 3rd photo on the page, Correct?
