Mine sure do. I am very happy with all three and know them well. They have been steady for a number of years. They always ask when I'll be getting more plants! If I go to meet them at the truck to save them a trip, they'll often say, 'It's not plants!'
My UPS guy thanked me last fall for keeping him busy. He said he can always rely on me for a few deliveries a week. Of course they are not all garden-related, but many are. One FedEx guy, who is not my normal guy, always says he loves coming to my house when things are growing. He said just walking down my driveway relaxes him. Another delivery person once said, 'This is like Disneyworld!'
How are your delivery people? Do they take good care of the plants? (I told my guys that I expect the plants to ride in the front seat with them.) Are they sympathetic? Appreciative? Do they think you're nuts?! Does the sound of their truck approaching raise your pulse, like it does mine? Are you upset when they deliver to your neighbors and not you? I am.
Your Mail/UPS/FedEx delivery person know you're addicted?
That is too funny! I don't know my delivery drivers very well- if I tried to get to know them better my dh would probably think I was flirting! lol But I do get a raised pulse when I hear them coming when I know I should be getting a delivery and I do get sad when they end up delivering to my neighbors! : )
Victor it is a relief to know their is someone as complusive as I.
Hee hee - I'm sure there are many, Peter! Funny about the flirting, Meredith.
I can tell which one is coming by the sound.
I do remember the ups driver saying 'wow' you aren't kidding around! That was last year - when he was dropping a plant order last year. I had my garage door open and he could see my 20 something flats of seedlings. lol I have been told I am a flirt - I just don't know I am doing it. he he
My little guy used to equate UPS with daddy's plants so if I got a UPS delivery in January he would ask what plants I got!
Cute - my dd asks me stuff like that too. When I get bulbs I have to explain why the plant is 'dead'. :) She kinda gets it better, now that she has helped plant seeds -I tell her it's kinda like a seed - we have to plant and water it to get the plant. Now 'she' tells her daddy how everything works. lol
Better watch the flirting with a chatty daughter!!
I'm waiting for the UPS guy right now, driving DH nuts, pacing and constantly looking out the window. The dogs love him too 'cause he always has treats in his pockets. They aren't allowed to take food from strangers, but they know he'll give them to me and I'll let them have them after he leaves.
Since we're on the subject does anybody have any clue how their delivery rates work? I've had huge, heavy boxes delivered and been charged maybe 11.00 for delivery. yet, when I go to their website to see about sending something small the charges are outrageous!! Do big business get a discount I wonder?
I know that business get a discount on UPS rates only because my sister has a business and told me so. I am never home when deliveries come - except for the rare Saturday. :(
Our mailman would come and sit in our garden sometimes when it was near his break. It was only for a minute or two, but it was enjoyable. He has a very nice yard. He also has had my DH make some mats for him. He does a lot of panoramic pictures.
I haven't been in to buying a lot that had to be delivered until I joined DG, so we'll see. Ask me this same question in a year. :)
Hee hee. We'll just check with the PO.
Jan23 what kind of mats?
My UPS guy just left...big OUCH, I got nailed with brokerage fees. I've been ordering from the US for years...why now?
Mats for pictures in frames. He only wanted mats, so he can change out the pics for demonstrations. We have a set-up in the basement for framing. Kind of a sideline for DH. It brings in a little extra. We're only word-of-mouth now, cuz of his teaching, but maybe someday it will expand along with furniture making.
Three gardeners I've been nailed for brokerage fees for bringing in fine art from the states. The first year we lived here I put a big WELCOME DAHLIAS sign or DELIVER SEEDS HERE sign on the lawn when expecting deliverys so the delivery guys know me now.
What, no arrows on the lawn??
Lol Victor :)
Once when the big brown truck pulled up to the house my son (who was 2 at the time) points to the guy(who was bald with a goatee like hubby) and says "daddy!" My hubby whips around and gives the guy a look and says "he better not be"
The ups guy is like "whoa hey this isn't my usual route"
It was sooooo funny!!!
Mail who knows us, still gets a bit befuddled when the iris plants come in. The bearded orders for the club also come to our house. the plants have to get out into the air, so we have irises spread out on newspapers, our plants & club plants separated.
It's easier to have everything delivered to my work address, so the delivery employees are getting to know my planting purchases.
I've been averaging a couple packages a week for the last month; mostly seed companies, but it was Buggy Crazy last week, and Ronnigers today. This provides an opportunity to share gardening with others & possibly promote the companies I am ordering from.
As far as businesses getting shipping discounts: absolutely - based in part on the volume shipped and whether or not the physical location is on an existing route. (Not an issue in metropolitan areas.)
the mailman here is new... not so sure yet... but our ups guy is great... fedex is always terrible the packages are always busted up
With UPS Tracking used by some plant people ,I meet the " guy in shorts" at the door.
UPS driver is DH friend...my plants DO ride in the front seat Victor!! LOL
nice!
Yup and air conditioner on hot days! lol
Hee hee - lucky you, Celeste! Air bags?
I'l have to ask him...ironiclly, his name is Al (Alan).
i am not always home with mr. ups shows up - when i am he is always asking me what kind of trees are in there. the mail man thinks i am nuts - and i usually miss the fedex guy.
funny story - several years ago a ups guy had a new guy along for training - the regular guy was laughing so hard he was crying when he got to my house - it seems at a house down the street a dog charged him and caught him by the shoe and ripped the sole almost off - and my neighbor blamed the ups guy for running away when the dog charged him!! i guess he should have had treats! I think i would have laughed as well. poor guy with one shoe was not laughing
My FedX guys says "I always see you when you get something from so and so company", which is plants most of the time LOL! My son met him at the door and told me Jerry is here! I almost offered him an applesauce (lenten) muffin, then I remembered how icky they taste. He might not be so nice after that! LOL
you are right - still look at my neighbor funny - never even apologized
I always hear them comment on the "jungle" of the front porch. We haven't had a regular postal worker deliver anything in about a year or two. Most of the USPS delivery people are temps now, for whatever reason. I know last year there were a few times when I would wake up in the afternoon ( I work night shift) and there would be packages from USPS, UPS, and Fed Ex...lol. It always felt like Christmas! The delivery person only needs to walk about 20' or so to our porch, and if/when things are in bloom that have a very high scent factor, I hear the delivery people commenting on them. If it's not hyacinths, it's the wisteria, if it's not that it's the lilies...lol...it cracks me up.
Cool. I've heard the 'jungle' word used too. Another called it a botanical garden. That was nice to hear!
What's wrong with some people? How can you not enjoy the fragrance of hyacinths in spring? It's like my dh and lilacs - he claims he's allergic. I've never heard of someone being allergic to a lilac's scent. Reminds me of my grumpy grandfather that would complain if he even smelled the soap you used! I don't get it, because I think it is so wonderful to smell flowers. Even if it is so strong I sneeze... it's still nice! lol
My Mom is allergic to everything...except flowers...wood smoke, any kind of soap or shampoo or cleaner. I'm not allowed to ever sit in her house!
wow wood smoke???
You can get too close to lilacs & have the pollen bother you. It does me. Of course he could be joking.
