ID these 3 Hoyas Please?

Fayetteville, NC

So, I ordered this hoya off of ebay from a Garden Place and they had it labeled as Hoya "Strawberries and Cream". The picture that was on ebay showed it with some pinkish leaves so I was like yah that makes sense. But, wonce I received the plant this is what I got. There is no pink on any of the leaves and it really doesnt look like the plant in the picture. So, is this the Strawberries and Cream or no?

Now, this is the one of the 2 I found today at Home Depot and it does have the pinkish on the leaves. This one is a Costa Farms from Home Depot and all it says for the label is Assorted Hanging Basket.

And, this is the 3rd but the tag says Hoya "Rubra" so is this infact that? It is from Exotic Angel and I know they sometimes mislabel there plants. This one doesnt look like the others so I thought maybe it was different.

This looks like two different plants to me.

Both of which are variegated Hoya Carnosas. The strawberry and cream silliness is just what that vendor calls it. You'll get the pink tint to the white parts of the leaves when they get alot (not direct!!) light.

I would preemptively spray down your new plant from Home Depot with some insecticide...I've noticed that all the HDs around here always have some creepy crawlies somewhere in their garden section.

Very healthy looking plants! Make sure you keep them in bright light but no direct sunlight which will fade out the foliage considerably. I know from experience with the carnosa's, as mine were looking terrible a year or so ago when they were getting way too much sun.

What type of Insecticide? I have some "soap" stuff that I got when my Croton that I bought from Walmart had spider mites. Will that work? Thank you so much for the ID's :D.

KM, in your third picture, that of Hoya 'rubra'(Krimson Princess), part of the plant has all green leaves. Mortwife says that this looks like two different plants.

While that is not out of the question, rubra/Krimson Princess will often revert back to plain green with new growth, so this plant is just likely mature, and it new growth is reverting back to its "roots".

Mine did that and initially I cut the new green growth off, but eventually I let it just grow because I liked it.

However, last fall I decided to restart the plant because it was very old, so I made cuttings and rooted the all green separately from the variegated cuttings.

Every single cutting died, green and variegated. I'm not sure why - it could be simply because it was so old. It could also be because I allowed the green to grow.

There's a very large differing opinion on this subject and I don't know if there's ever been an answer that's made sense.

My "Krimson Princess" has partially reverted to the solid green. It's an old plant that I received as a small rooted plant in 1976.

Is there any special care that I need to do for these Hoyas? These are my first Hoyas so I have alot of reading up to do. I am a new plant grower and so far I have had alot of success with my plants. The only plant that I am having trouble with is my Yucca. I cant see to find the right spot that it likes. So, I just want to make sure I give it the right care that it needs. Maybe, I will try to cut some cuttlings off and try to root them and see what happens. How do you root a Hoya?

K: Check out the links at the very top of the Hoya Forum, General Information for new Hoya growers: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/hoya/all/ Lots of great information on growing and cultivating these beautiful plants. I don't like to give advice because what works for me and my conditions where I live, may be totally wrong for someone else.

Lin, love your carnosa. Wish mine would grow that big.
Love the plant in the white square pot. The roots are awesome. Is it a ficus? It's a beauty.

Thanks Eileen! That hoya came from a dear elderly couple back in 1976. It was a small little plant and I had no idea what it was but they were sweet friends and always sharing plants! It grew and grew over the years and last year I divided it into two of those large pots. They are so pretty when in full bloom.

Yes, that plant in the square pot is a Ficus benjamina. One of those braided novelties that the garden centers were selling a few years ago. I got it on the clearance table at Wal-Mart. Not my favorite plant, it needs repotting cause one of the cats knocked it over and the side of that pot is broken. That's happened twice now, with a cat breaking a ceramic pot with that little tree!
