Row orientation, N/S, or E/W?

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

I'm wondering which way most people plant? I'm lucky enough to be able to do either, so I'm looking for some practical input. Last year I did basically N/S, and that's the way my haybales run, as well. I know I decided to do that for a reason, but I'll be darned if I can remember WHY I did it.

Any thoughts?

I think the consideration for most people is shade or the slope of the land.

For me, the slope means all my watering will run right off if I go N/S, so we decided on E/W rows to hopefully hold some of the water.

I have never gardened on a slope, however, I was always taught to plant N to S...otherwise the veggies in front would shield all the others.

But then sometimes you want the veggies to get some shade, like lettuce or spinach in hotter weather.

I plant E/W because of the wind. All of the citrus groves and big fields down here are planted E/W too.
