Ellerslie International Flower Show

A friend of mine got Bronze with her entry, after all the blood sweat & tears to think up the concept, create the piece, assemble it on site & then keep it nice for the 5 days on display she has said never again....
we will see:)
The marquee was very popular with queues up to an hour long to get in.
I was lucky & scored a free ticket & went on the final day so was able to wander happily snapping pics with very few crowds to contend with.
The theme for the the floral art was Hollywood.
so I will start with my friends entry of a directors chair...

but it started with a tribute to 'Sex in the City'

What a masterpiece that shoe is and what an ingenious idea of the directors chair. That is really different and so appropriate. What are the flowers attached to on the chair and did he make that chair as well?

haighr - the chair was part of the hard work out into the exhibit.
I was talking to the creator today & she commented on another piece that came apart...
she said that if you don't have sound mechanics then you are setting yourself up for failure.
I have never really had anything to do with floral art so it has been enlightening :)
I will have to ask exactly what flowers were used...
I know there were green chrysanthemums as we had a chat about how much 'oomph' they give to an arrangement.
As well as a shoe the first display had a handbag, an engagement ring & an assortment of sushi, cosmopolitans & other things pertaining to Sex & the City.
It was clever but the judges felt it was too cluttered...

Keep these coming dalfyre, I have never seen anything so incredible with flowers. That cake is a real piece of work. I like your friend's idea with the chair and purse and such, as a matter of fact I would be honored to wear such a ring that was outstanding! Judges don't know everything.
That "hats off" and the one before it are both incredible.
Terri get in here, some of these look like your work only on a hugeous scale! What marvels to see first thing in the morning, thanks for sharing.

the directors chair was done by my friend, she kept it simple - just the chair, a megaphone, clapboard & film spool.

the Sex in the City display was the shoe, handbag etc & done by a floral art group
I liked it but it was very 'busy' with all the small bits & bobs as well.
Unfortunately I was in a bit of a crowd & could not get far enough back to get a pic that took in the entire display.
My friend does some judging herself & felt that had there not been so much in that display they would have gained an award.
the sushi & other small bits would have made a really good display on their own, they were hard to see where they were positioned - hence no pics as I could not get a focus on them.
Shame as they were intriguing, I would have loved to have seen them closer to figure out how they made them.

Candee - I do see a lot of "terri" in some of those arrangements too. especially the rolled up cast iron plant leaves and the "cones" of flowers on the wedding cake. LoL. And the rolled up shiny metallic balls in the orchid/dress display.

Anyone know what the blue color flowers are in the shoe display?

Dianne, I think the flowers on the shoes are delphinium buds, but not 100 per cent sure!

Terri - Ellerslie is a suburb of Auckland & a rotary group started the first Flower Show as a fundraiser.
It proved very popular & eventually they sold the name to a private enterprise.
The show became too big for the Ellerslie Racecourse site & moved to Manukau & then last year the rights to the name were bought by the Christchurch City Council & it migrated down here to the South Island.
Your pics of Chelsea last year are what inspired me to take so many of Ellerslie this year:)
I am sure Jan would love to go to Chelsea - I would too but higher on my list would be a trip to Crufts.
I love my garden but dogs are my number one hobby.

I loved your Chelsea pics - they weren't the ones I remember seeing...
those were of the show gardens.
I have never done floral art but am thinking I would like to try it as all these wonderful arrangements have given me ideas.
Must speak to Jan at work & see what she suggests...

someone asked what the flowers were in the shoe...
the blue is gentian.
And the flowers in the directors chair are green chrysanthemums - two different kinds and rose buds.

Thank you for the info about your flower show. Glad you enjoyed the Chelsea floral designs, I kept them seperate from the main show so we could add our designs when the inspiration arrives!!
Good to hear you are getting interested in floral design, ask Jan about flower clubs, there should be one in your area. We welcome and love to see anyone willing to stick some flowers in a vase!
