CLOSED: Gosh, why can't I tell?

It is so frustrating to not have a discerning eye. I know this is a common bird, finch, sparrow?
Is there enough here to tell?

Thank you Resin, Can you please tell me was it the curved culmen? Can you see it in this photo or was it something else?

Yep, the curved culmen is a very useful feature, and visible in this pic. Other useful points are the beady black eye in an otherwise rather plain face, and the ill-defined pale edges to the wing feathers. The bird I found most difficult to exclude (given the lack of size pointers) was actually female Brown-headed Cowbird, but that wouldn't have the pale fringes, and also has a different shape head and bill.

Very kind of you to explain! Thank you.
