new epsicia

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

I have just ordered a new plant I've never grown before: "Silver Skies" Episcia. I have a glass container for it. Any advise on growing will be greatly appreciated. Cheryl

E. Silver Skies is a pretty one! http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/151783/

I think a couple of folks over on the AV Forum grow Episcia's! I've seen some lovely Episcia photo's posted by GoldLeaf, and I think BMedel or someone else grows them as well so you can probably get a lot of great advice on the AV Forum regarding Episcia's. I was new to Episcia's last year and had seven or eight, but lost all of them to mites!

Hey Everyone!

I may be too late for this thread but I grow them.

I used to have a few that I received in trades and a couple I found at Wal-Mart of all places. Most of my Gesneriad's have gone by the wayside (died) but a few days ago when I was rooting around through lots of my generic plants on the back deck I found one of my glass bowls with an Episcia growing great! The label on the glass bowl says E. 'Strawberry Patch' and I think that's what it is but I've been known to stick more than one in a container in the past so it could very well be a different one ... but the foliage does look like Strawberry Patch. There's also something else growing in with it, looks to be an AV.

Well, that's weird how dark that picture came out. It's pretty but the foliage is actually a lot lighter than that photo depicts. Let me move the plant out to bright daylight by the pool and take another picture ....

Lin, you are too funny! you can grow plants and not even know you are growing them. HA!

Connie, it's just that I have too many plants ... some get hidden behind other plants and get lost! I keep saying I'm going to downsize and get rid of some of them but it's easier said than done, LOL. I did dump a bunch of stuff out a month or so ago but I'm still bad about breaking off a little branch or piece of plant and instead of throwing it away I stick it down into the soil of another pot and end up with more plants! My husband is going to retire (hopefully) in another six or seven years and then I will definitely be getting rid of a lot plants because we will be selling this house and moving to a townhouse ... I'm already tired of yard work and keep saying I didn't think I'd be mowing a lawn at 61. Actually, I don't mind a little yard work but it's just so darned hot and humid and the older I get the more it gets to me! Down here we have to mow our lawns sometimes well into November! My dear Mother in law was such an inspiration to me. She lived to be 97 and at the age of 90 was still driving, and mowing her almost acre of property ... and a neighbors as well!

I'm still not sure if my Epicia is 'Strawberry Patch' .. I'm so not good at identifying from pictures! I had Strawberry Patch seeds from another DG'er a couple of years ago and grew a couple, and the jar is labeled with that name so maybe it is. Check out this photo in Plant Files of E. Strawberry Patch ... WOW! An Amazing plant! http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/112764/

That is a very pretty plant and it looks like yours, Lin. I am not sure what the green one is though. Don't you need some more :) You are not 61. You must be talking about after your husband retires. I saw your bingo pic...maybe 40ish? My uncle retired out of the military and moved into The Villiages there in Fla. Loved it! He passed away and my aunt still lives there. She is so addicted to golf now. Can't pull her away.

Oh, you are soo sweet. Yep, I turned 61 last March, I can start collecting Social Security next year. ^_^ My husband is turning 60 on the 29th of this month. Sometimes my body feels 50, sometimes 90, LOL. I do count my blessings every day because the only medication I take is advil for the occasional head aches or aches and pain of arthritis. That Bingo pic was awful! I have one on my home page too of my DH and me and our cat that was taken last Christmas. My hair is shorter now. I had 8" cut off a month or so ago but it grows so fast, it's below my shoulders again. I wear a pony tail most of the time anymore.

Wow! See, you look so young! Fla. does you good, Girl! Was that a shock to cut that much off at once? I have always had long hair and I decided enough is enough. Got it cut to just below my shoulders, went into shock and haven't cut it for a year (except my bangs). You really look 40ish. I thought that was close to your age hoping you wouldn't get mad if you were in your late 30's. (wiping the sweat of my brow). You have some great genes!

You are too sweet! I've aged a lot the past ten years and its really beginning to show - wrinkles, sags and bags, and extra weight! Aaah ... menopause! I'm not complaining though, I feel it's just life, there's no such thing as a fountain of youth, LOL. I keep saying if I weren't such a chicken and could afford it, I might consider a nip and tuck here and there, but I've never been in a hospital in my life and can't imagine being cut on. That's just too scary for me, so I am trying my hardest to age ... gracefully! (some days are easier than others though!) ^_^

A lady I worked with about 18 years ago took a few weeks off to have a face lift and when she came back to work it was hard for folks to look at her. Her face looked like it had been stretched way too tight, and it took awhile to get used to it! I know another lady, wife of my husbands friend who had a face lift and she looked fabulous. It really took a dozen years off her looks. I think it really depends on the surgeon. She said she was pretty bruised for a couple of weeks, post-op, when I saw her she looked fabulous!

When I had dental surgery two years ago a lady was there to see one of the doctors. I thought it was entirely a dental practice but one of them was a plastic surgeon. The lady asked me if I was there to see Dr. so and so about a face lift and I said no, I was there to see my oral surgeon. She said, "Oh, you should make an appt. with my doctor, he's done a few procedures on me and he's really good." I guess she was insinuating that I needed a face lift, but my goodness she was NOT good advertisement for that doctor at all! She'd had a lot of "face" work done as well as that permanent makeup they tatoo on your face, and it was really not very attractive.

Well, I'm rambling here ... think I will go check out some of the other forums/threads.

You are in an area where there is a lot of high maintenance people. I live in a very rural area where people grow old and the saying goes "just deal with it". No pressure anywhere here. lol

(Zone 1)

LOL, I totally agree with your attitude "Just Deal With It." Makes life much easier and there are more important things to be concerned with than trying to turn back the clock. Youth is for the young. I don't feel any pressure whatsoever to have to look any particular way, thank goodness! I feel blessed that I don't have to work anymore, no more dresses, suits, high heels etc. My every day attire is shorts, stained t-shirts, flip flops, and my hair in a pony tail, and no makeup! We are very casual down here!
