(Mahonia aquifolium var repens)
palmbob,
Where was this photo taken? Also, is that growing in mostly shade or does it get more sun than it looks like in that photo?
that was in a botanical park... where it is it gets 1/4 day sun... only place I've seen it, though
Very nice! I assume the Botanical Park is out in your neck of the woods(Southern Cali), correct?
yup
We used to have this growing in the woods on our 5 acre property when I was a child. Even then, I had a strong interest in plants & would do my best to find what they were. I had no idea of botanical names but learned it was Oregon grape. When I grew up, I assumed it was likely M. repens but the leaves were far to sharp & holly-like to be that so I'm fairly sure it was M. aquifolium var. repens instead.
Our property was near Vancouver BC Canada & it grew tangled in the woods but not deep in the darkest parts. It was mixed with sahal & many mosses. Along the edge of the woods & a bit deeper inside, it was filled with vine maple (Acer circinatum), Douglas spirea, trilliums, starflowers ((Trientalis borealis), trumpet honeysuckle (Trientalis borealis), wild asters, chicory, wild tigerlily, golden rod, fireweed, many different kinds of clover, wild strawberries (so good tasting) & many other plants that I didn't know what they were as a child & can't remember them all.
Sadly, the area is completely 'developed' now & much of the native flora has changed or disappeared. Himalayn blackberry was unknown here when I was a child & now it covers vast swathes along with Himalayan knotweed (Polygonum polystachyum). Very sad really. The rich diversity of native plants is what started a lifelong love affair with botany in me & few children now can experience what I did.
