Zhinu's new yard

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Well for what it's worth here it is. It's pretty much a blank slate, but I can do whatever I want to it. I need to do a sun chart, but I think the back is full shade and the front and side is partial sun. The bit under the trees doesn't get wet when it rains.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Laura it will be so adorable, I can see a country garden coming up..you've had quite a time of it..bet you are thanking your lucky stars it's behind you now..you are so lucky to have had Trisha..

Love it...

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

My ideal is native and useful plants mixed. My idea is to put up some cinder blocks to create a wall between my yard and the next door neighbors. Put a herb garden by the back door. Put down stepping stones through the side and back yard and plant the rest. I'm putting the bulbs I pulled in the flower box, not sure what else I'm doing in the front, though I'm thinking of putting in some more beds.

Mom was a life saver, I don't think we could have done the move without her.

Go make your neighborhood a wonderful place with your garden techniques and bright attitude all will be better. Enjoy the change in your life. Change is fun!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Trish, You have some neat places to work with, don't jump to - I got to. Feel it, enjoy it. Set out with a cuppa or a tea, what ever works. And feel the insight you have to what you want. we will be here to help. Just pick the first one to tackle.

Eugene, OR

Baby steps. Glad you're getting settled. Lost of work ahead, but with all the help and advice here it should make it easier. Enjoy starting something new.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

I'm so glad you are settled in your new place. Moving is a real pain, but like Steve says the change can be an opportunity to try new things and have fun doing it. Herbs are a great idea, both beautiful and useful, and generally don't take up too much space. I love going out to get thyme and rosemary to cook with practically any time of year. The flower box will look fabulous with bulbs blooming right by the door.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Well... I wouldn't say we're moved in. Most of our stuff is still in boxes, but we have a good start at least.

Eugene, OR

10 yrs later and I still have a couple of boxes that just aren't going to get unpacked. LOL

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I went through all the boxes that didn't get unpacked 3 years ago, but I hope to unpack everything that isn't meant to be packed and stored (holiday stuff for instance).

I forgot that I need to let my DSD make a rock garden. We packed 6+ small flat rate sized boxes full of rocks and I told her she could only keep 4 of them if she made them into a rock garden. She loves rocks

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Oooh, a rock garden will be fun. And they don't mind a little shade.

Eugene, OR

I love rock gardens, in fact I love rocks too. LOL

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I'll try to take pictures of her collection when we unpack it so you can see what I'm talking about. We think she's going to be a geologist or mineralogist when she grows up. The only thing she like more than rocks is cats.

Eugene, OR

Aha!!! Just like me!!

Rock garden with a waterfall!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Laura, you're going to have a ball making that your very own Oasis. I'm going to enjoy watching it transform very much. I love change and transformation in the landscape!
I like rocks too! Funny thing is, in Central Oregon, if you don't like rocks, you're in the wrong place! Our soil is only 2' deep, in some places only 2", then it's solid rock. We have a rock shelf in our hayfield that goes all the way through the property from one side to the other. We have to water that alot, even to the point where it leaves standing water and even at that, 2 days later it's bone dry as if it never gets any water at all.
Enjoy your new home!^_^

Trisha, mom you did good with your help! Here's a pat on the back to you!^_^

I always have to unpack in the first few days or I can't sleep.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Oh, yay! A blank slate with a rock garden somewhere. So excited for you.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Soferdig, we went from a 4 bed room, 2 1/2 bath, huge house to a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, small house. It took two days just trying to figure out more or less where things went and we still have a few to place.

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Congratulations on your move. Glad you had your Mom to help. Your yard looks like it has loads of possibilities. Best of luck getting unpacked and organized so you can start on your 'rock' garden.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I have always had a huge cheap garage sale before each move so when I get there I can start afresh and only have to move precious stuff. Though I haven't moved in a long time and don't plan on it with what we have put in our garden.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Know the feeling...

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Well I got my flowerbed/bulbs planted today. If they survive they should look really nice in a week or so.

Here's a close up. It's Tulips, Daffodils, Crocus, Iris, and something I got for my birthday that I can't remember what is. I have no clue what the stuff that was already there is. I'm hoping with the bed being dryer than their last home, and hopefully with better drainage, I won't have the issues with my bulbs molding. I had to pull the skins off several because they had mold on them, none that had moldy flesh this time, and I don't know how many bulbs I've found in my last yard molded out or mushy. I think my yard is more weeds than anything else, including grass; well maybe there's more ivy, but then that is a weed by the definition that a weed is anything you don't want in your yard.

Good going Laura, it's a start. Since my mom can't get out much, I took her over some tulip bulbs in vases to watch grow. She told me today when I first walked in "There almost ready" so I know she's enjoying it.

Had a house in CA that had more crabgrass than grass. Just mowed it and kept it green til I could deal with it.^_^

(Judi)Portland, OR

Laura it sounds like you are really making the new place a home. You've already done so much work! How nice that you brought bulbs with you from your last place - continues a kind of history. You and your mom have been so busy!

My neighbor, who is a garden planner, is creating a rain garden in her yard with rocks. I don't know too much about it but she is soon teaching a class on it for the city of Portland. They are encouraging rain gardens to help reduce the runoff pollution from yards into the rivers. Sounds interesting.

Have fun in your new home and take time to enjoy the process. Change is good indeed!

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Zhinu - well done, look forward to the development! I notice in the photo of the Rosemary bush that there is already a path created by all who visit - How about placing a nice, chunky arch there with a flag stone path. Might as well formalize what is already in use - too hard to get people to change their habits - Then, rather than a rose, how about a lovely fragrant wisteria growing on it? Oh, I do love a new project. this is going to be fun.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Laura,
Looks like there is a ton of potential! How exciting :0) You have dmail :0)

Eugene, OR

Laurie, you certainly have a good eye....to catch that path by the rosemary bush. And what a charming idea to enhance it.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

There's actually a good thing about everything being almost all weeds-really gives you a blank slate and no worries about ripping it out to do what you want. :)

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Laurie, an arch would be a cool addition, but I'm not sure if that's on my "property" or the neighbors; I'd definitely have to talk to them before doing it as they use it more than me. They take the dog over to the high school to walk it.

Susy, that's what I meant by blank slate, it'll be a lot of work, but I have a lot of hope that I can turn it into something to be proud of.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

oh, wow, I must not be reading carefully tonight! Guess only a few other folks have said this same thing! Still makes it more fun, though! :)

The cool thing is that even the things you try now and change your mind about later will have a huge impact to start with. :) Are you required to keep any lawn?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

He said I could do what ever I wanted to the yard, except build permenent structures, but if I decided to pull the lawn and replace it, which I am into if I had the money to do it right, I'd get specific permission.
